DLA and car tax Q's

Hi, i need some advise on this kinda stuff.

Right my 16 year old sister broke her back over the weekend and is expected to stay at a specialst injury unit for 6-8 months minimum. We have been told after 12 maybe 16 weeks she can go out for a few hours and maybe come home for a night or two.

All we need to know is

When can we apply for DLA for her?
When can we apply for a motobility car?
How many cars can be exepted from tax?

She will have shared care once she comes home for good between my mum and i but i dont live with my mum and sister. Plus both our cars will need adaptions for wheelchair acces.

I think it has to be 3 months before you can claim (if I am wrong someone will correct me)

The mobility car will depend on your DLA award (rate and period)

No car will be exempt from tax but the part of her DLA award which pays for a mobility car will cover the tax on that car only.

A VED exemption certificate can be issued for any vehicle. Motobility conveniently omit this and include "car tax included" in their advertising.

Form DLA404 to apply for an exemption cert.

You can only receive Free Car tax if you receive High Rate mobility.

You will also need to check that you can claim DLA if your DD is still in hospital. There are some rules regarding this.

You can claim DLA once a paerson has needed help for 13 weeks and will need help for at least a further 6 months.

You can only apply for a car once you have recieved HR mobility.

1 car is exempt from Car tax but there a certain conditions regarding useage of the car and that it has to be purposely used for the person receiving DLA. It can not be used for work etc.

My husband applied for all his benefits after he came out hospital including DLA. This was not back dated for the 3 months he was in hospital as someone else is taking care of his needs.

And if you where already claiming DLA before you went in you would get it only for the first 28 days.

Does the ward not have a social worker attached to it. My husband had a stroke and they did have.

I wish your sister a speedy recovery.

    Yours

You must have at least 12 months of DLA higher rate mobility award usually to apply for a Mobility scheme vehicle, most leases are for 3 years and some require a 3 year award to proceed. Basically because if the DLA stops, you have to pay the costs yourself for the rest of the lease or give the car back, which of course they don't want.

The unit where she is will probably be able to advise you of benefit entitlements etc

There is no middle rate of mobility, only higher or lower, the care component of DLA has 3 levels

If the person providing the care has to work or go shopping then the car can be used for those purposes~but it would apply ONLY to the main carer. Any other cars tax would have to be paid for as normal and pay for own addaptions etc.

If it is shared care then it would be best IF they get high rate mobility to get a car on the scheme then all sharing the care use that one car when taking them out and your own cars for normal usage.
