Capital One Stolen Credit Card Details

Does anyone know the procedure between the police and credit card companies regarding stolen credit card details?
I received a phone call from Capital One to say that a student had been arrested with my credit card details. (I still had the card in my possession). My card was stopped and no fraudulent transactions had been made. However, when I asked Capital One for details of which police force was dealing with the matter I was told that they didn't record this. I wished to contact the police as I had an idea where the details may have been obtained from. As an accountant with a compliance background I find it hard to believe that a major company such as Capital One would just go ahead and stop someone's credit card without an audit trail back to the original information triggering that action. The fact that Capital One knew it was a student arrested also means that they had some details of this event.
Any inside info from Capital One would be appreciated.

It was capital one phoning, not some scam? I find it strange that they would say it was a 'student'0

Same thought as lipidicman. I'd ring Capital One and double check it's genuine.
Many years ago I was notified by the 'police' at work that my card details had been recovered from raided premises along with masses of other card numbers. It was only when the 'officer' asked for confirmation of my card details that I smelt a rat and obviously refused. When I rang my card company it was all news to them !!!
Can't hurt to double check.0 -
When my Tesco card was cloned just a few days after receipt I didn't know anything about it until Tesco finance phoned to say that 'a man' had tried to use my card online. The only reason it triggered a fraud alert was because the card was brand new and had a very low limit and the purchaser attempted to exceed that limit.
They certainly weren't interested in how my card was cloned despite me pointing out that it was a new card and only ever used once in Tesco so the security problem had to be within Tesco somewhere. Nobody actually appeared to care about the crime at all, just that they needed to get a new card out for me so I can spend on it. I even wrote to them asking for details of what would happen about the person attempting to use my card online and got back a standard response that didn't address the question and just assured me that Tesco were working to keep their customers safe.

Yes, it was a genuine call from Capital One as I phoned them back on 2 occasions to discuss the matter, and I've since had new cards etc. It was quite difficult to determine that it was a genuine call initially - it wasn't until they were able to tell me my previous transactions that I actually believed the call was genuine.
