I've been Money Tipped!
Hi, i need some advise on this kinda stuff.

Right my 16 year old sister broke her back over the weekend and is expected to stay at a specialst injury unit for 6-8 months minimum. We have been told after 12 maybe 16 weeks she can go out for a few hours and maybe come home for a night or two.

All we need to know is

When can we apply for DLA for her?
When can we apply for a motobility car?
How many cars can be exepted from tax?

She will have shared care once she comes home for good between my mum and i but i dont live with my mum and sister. Plus both our cars will need adaptions for wheelchair acces.

You can apply immediately. Takes about 3 months to process completely.
You can apply for a motability car once you get the award BUT you would only qualify if she was expected to get the highest rate of the mobility component of DLA for the full term of the motability agreement.
One car per DLA claim, so one.

If you're going the motability route, there's a company in West yorks that does wheelchair converted Fiat Doblos. Go for the 1.9 Turbo Diesel one with aircon. It'll cost you £700-ish as a deposit but they're great. They come with a ramp on the back. You wheel the chair up a ramp, clamp in the chair and there's a safety belt that goes over the passenger. SIL has 2 kids with Duschens MD and has one of these. Far better than hoiking them in and out of a normal car.

Apply now for everything, but only the one car can be exempt from road tax... That is assuming you get awarded the higher rate DLA mobility.

You only get road tax exemption if you get the higher rate mobility DLA

They also discount the first 3 months of DLA as we found out

Only one car and it must be used for purposes of the person who is eligible but you can be the driver. As I am for my daughter who gets DLA. You xan then then claim back the road tax once you get the new one minus one month

You can get the car under the higher rate mobility DLA or a scooter I think you then loose the money for DLA

Also DLA is very hard to get they seem to want claimants to fail. They are also very very slow to pay up and in my daughters case they still havent paid here teh full amount of DLA back

It's a standard insurance policy in this respect so you'd have no problems with having both parents and say a relative on the policy.

  • just reading the handbook from motability scheme and the norm is for 2 nominated drivers only, however it states that you have 'the option to call r&sam and nominate a third driver (subject to some restrictions) at an additional cost'. no idea what the costs are or restrictions hope this helps
