Medical electives abroad

Hello all,
Does anyone have any advice about going away for elective? I am going to stay in the UK this year (it just ended up being easier) but was wondering about doing another elective abroad in subsequent years. As I will be travelling on my own, ideally I'd like to go with a company/organisation. I know that many of my fellow colleagues have had difficulty in arranging their electives abroad especially if they do not 'know' someone in the hospital/have contacts.
I am slightly perturbed by the fact that certain companies ask for relatively large sums of money to organise them for you like medicstravel. I wouldn't mind giving a reasonable sum of money to a charity because at least it will be going to good use! Haven't really found much in the way by doing google searches. Has anyone been away with a charity or company that is charges reasonable costs for the elective or would recommend any particular company?
