Hi;
I want to keep my IP address dynamic.
It is set to this with my ISP- however to get it to change, what do I do? Do I have to turn the router on and off... or unplug the phone.... or just disconnect and reconnect from my laptop??
Any info most appreciated

check what your ip address is first (via a website), then turn the router off for 2 min and then turn it back on and then check what it is again and hopefully it should have changed

Hi always_amazed,
IP addressing, when working dynamically, is based on a pool of numbers. The servers assign the numbers starting with the lowest and using the next free number each time. When an IP address becomes "free" (the host computer using it is turned off) it is thrown back into the pool. However, it will only be used again once the servers have gone through the entire pool and back round to it.
Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use different parameters regarding the "lease" of these IP addresses. Some ISPs automatically renew your IP address every 24hours, whether you are still using it or not. Others will give you a new one every time you reconnect. And others still, particularly those with a large pool of numbers available, only take an IP address away from a host when it has run out of numbers in the pool and that host is offline.
What I am trying to say is, turning your router off may not be necessary as your IP might change once a day anyway, or, it might not work at all, if you are with an ISP with a large pool.
The best bet is to check what your IP is via https://www.whatismyip.com and then try turning your router off and on again. If this doesn't work then try turning your router off for an hour or so (if that is possible). Failing that check what your IP is tomorrow to see if its changed.
I don't see why unplugging the phone would change your IP (unless you meant unplugging the entire microfilter which would disconnect both your phone and your broadband router). Disconnecting your laptop from your router would definitely not change your external IP address.
Hope this helps.

Right; just tested it and all I need to do with mine is turn off the router and turn it back on again, only waiting about 30 seconds or so! I actually needed to know this to make sure more daily clicks tracked... am needing every penny I can these days!!LBM : August 2007my debts: less than this time last year....!DFW Nerd Club #706I'm Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts

Wanted dynamic IP as some of the certain search engines block your IP if you are using them too much through cashback sites. But I'm in a major penny making drive these days so am desperate to make the most out of daily clicking that I can

as someone who's never looked into such things, is there much to be made,and is it a lot of bother?Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

It is quite a lot of bother, yes. But due to illness I spend a fair whack of time not moving much, in bed, so it's an ideal way for me to make a few extra pennies. I'm at about £2 per day so far.. so about £700 per year. It's fiddly but lucrative, as martin says!LBM : August 2007my debts: less than this time last year....!DFW Nerd Club #706I'm Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts
