How badly cracked is it? It may be possible to repair, using epoxy glue ofrsilicone sealant.

Check your buildings insurance policy as you may be covered for "accidental breakage of sanitary fittings" even if you haven't extended your insurance to accidental damage - this is certainly the case with Prudential insurance as i just checked. Though whether or not it is worth claiming through insurance will depend on your excess.

It's an hairline cracked. The colour is alpine blue & I had just had a quote for nearly £300 + £35 postage. In this case, it will be better if I replace the whole suite in white. The insurance does cover fixtures and fittings but hubby does not want claim from them as he said they will increase premium if we do claim. This is really doing my head as it my own fault I got a screw jammed and whilst trying to force it, I cracked the cistern. As it is now, the toilet is leaking we have got to bowls underneath it. It's not my day, I still cannot think what to do, plumbers do not come cheap. My stupid mistake is going to cost me loads. Thanks for your suggestions and help.

Use epoxy glue or silicone sealant to seal the crack. I cracked bathroom my sink a few years ago by dropping a hammer into it, and fixed the leak using epoxy glue. It's never leaked since.

Do you have an isolation point to turn the water supply off (help with the buckets etc).

Buying a new suite in white may be better as if anything else goes wrong you'll need to pay higher prices to source the items.

    Best of luck.

if it is a hairline crack, I'd dry the cistern out, generously superglue it so on the inside so it soaks in to the ceramic. Then next day epoxy it.

If it is not close coupled, build a box around it and fit in a plastic cistern with chrome push button for eternal flush and viewing (£30 from bes)
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)
