Barring outgoing calls on phone line but using braodband

My son is about to start house sharing whilst at uni and they had hoped to be able to have incoming calls only on their phone line. As they will also be having a broadband package for internet usage they were told this cannot be done. It is only an option for where use is telephone only not internet. Anyone have any ideas if there is a way around this?

does he not trust the people he is living with? we had a shared house and the phone wasnt a problem...no1 used it really cause everyone had mobiles...the only time it was used was for incomming...i set up a 18866 account which meant i payed for all the calls myself. we also got talk talk on there (cause it was free) i think the most the bill came to on calls was £1 (and thats a house of 9!)
  • When I shared a house - BT had only just introduced itemised billing, and mobile phones were still about the size & weight of a housebrick.

It was simply sorted when the phone bill arrived, someone opened it and highlighted all of their calls in their colour - next person did the same, etc until all the calls were accounted for.

Then the call bill for each person was worked out and the line rental divided equally.

Any calls that no one would own up to were either obvious (same area code as other calls they'd owned up to etc) or quickly sorted by another call to the same number.... mind you when parties took place the phone sets were all removed from the wall to prevent anyone accidentally calling the speaking clock in New York and leaving it off hook :)
There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't

In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice
  • I have call barring enabled and also use broadband with no problems.
Are you on BT or cable?

Is that just the 09 (premium rate) call barring.? I have that (hang over from dial-up days) and a non-BT broadband and it works.
  • It is the full call barring package from BT.
I can bar, premium, mobile/international, incoming and all outgoing calls.
There are other options but they have slipped my mind.

It is a BT line but will be non BT braodband. How do you set up call barring? Is it something you can do yourself or do BT have to do it?

you should be able to use call barring and broadband - because broadband operates on higher frequencies than calls so assuming it doesn't block out all frequencies you'll be fine.. (hence why you need microfilters)

Any idea on what I need to do to use call barring? BT said it can't be done if using broadband.
