Economy seven

Options
My house is a 3 bed semi and I only use electric as our village does not have gas. I have just put my payments up to £130 a month, but i am not sure they will cover the soaring prices. I do not heat water anymore in my emersion heater because of expense. So at night the electric usage is for the storage heater, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge/freeezer. I currently use 70 units a night and 22 in the day. Is this high, I have contacted e-0n and they do not help. I have a £750 bill from the winter to pay off as well.
Can any one advise.
Thank you

  • How many storage heaters do you have? I'd do a comparison with other companies rates as that seems very high to me...and I though my £70 a month was high!

    £130 seems high.
It may be worth doing a bit of testing. Eg try and turn off as much as you can in the house/garage everywhere. Then slowly put one item back on at a time eg fridge/freezer and see if anything makes it spike/shoot up in its consumption.

Also are you 100% sure when your Economy 7 times are? I think they can vary when the clocks change.

Check your Eon terms & conditions. They may say something along the lines of we will check your meter within 10 working days if you raise a query. So ring them to specifically check that the meter is working ok (double check there is no cost to do this). You can also clarify the Economy 7 timings when you ring.

Do you put your washing machine or dishwasher on long washes or long hot washes? If they have to heat their own water that can add a bit to the expense.

I think the usual calculation for Econ7 is that you need to use roughly a third of your electric at night to make the costs work out ok.

Since my timer broke down last year, I take readings around twice a week and your readings sound very high.

During the night we use electricity for 6 storage heaters, imersion heater, fridge-freezer, dishwasher etc plus occasional use of washing machine and number of units used just now runs from 50 to 60 depending on how cold weather is.

Day time units run around 10, more if I cook a lot or use the tumble dryer.

    We have 3 bed house.

    I don't think 70kWh at night in winter is particularly high(about £3?)

I would be more worried about the 22 day units - which indicates you are using some for heating.

If you have stopped using your immesion heater because of cost, how do you heat water? One of the great advantages of E7 is you can heat water at cheap rate.
