Soda stream makes lovely fizzy water.

I can't find another reference to this, so I'm sorry if I'm repeating someone else's suggestion, but DH has high blood pressure and was concerned that the 2 pints of sparkling bottled water he was drinking was very high in sodium (which can't have done his high BP any good), so he started using our old sodastream to make his own sparkling water.
He needed a few months of persuading before he tried it (he couldn't see how squirting gas into tap water could produce anything good enough) but now he actually prefers it to the salty taste of the bottled stuff. And its turned a dinosaur gadget back into a useful household item that's in daily use.

How does it work out cost-wise? I assume as you're not using flavourings, the main issue is the cost of gas cartridges.
I don't have a Sodastream (though I bet I could get one on Freecycle if I wanted) but I drink gallons of fizzy water - I currently buy the value stuff at 17p for 2 litres at Tesco/Asda/Morrisons.Operation Get in Shape

X L cylinders are £12.50 ish and make 110 litres - thats 11p a litre0 -
Hmmm. So the supermarket stuff is cheaper. However I guess if you have the machine already, and the sodium levels are a concern to you, I wouldn't consider it a major price hike on the supermarket cost - and you're saving all those 2 litre plastic bottles so it's good for the environment, too

I bought a Sodastream from ebay last year as I only drink fizzy water and it costs a bomb. My cartridges, which last about 3 months, cost £3.49 from Tesco. I use water from my water filter jug, fizz it up and then put some into a recycled bottle and usually have that in my bag for when I am thirsty. Its so lovely to take out the big bottle from the fridge, pour into a glass and sit down to a cheap, refreshing drink. I generally drink fizzy water every day, or a cup of tea, not usually anything else. I don't like still water!
No carrying from the supermarket, no additives (apart from flouride etc!)and I am using the same bottle again and again. The little bottle (330ml) that I carry in my bag is a glass fizzy water bottle - £1.75 down the pub!!0 -
I remember taking the gas bottles to Coop to get refilled/swapped.....memories....:Oh those bottles, the glass ones, not the new plastic thing. One day I might be more organised...........
GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0 -
What about a good old fashioned soda syphon anyone any idea how much they work out at per litre0

There are two prices for the gas cartridges. The first time you buy a cartridge you pay the hire charge. (£12.50 ish) then you take it back to the supermarket and swap it for a new one and pay £3.49 ish just for the gas.0

When I got my Sodastream from ebay the gas cartridge was with it, so no paying the £12.50. The Sodastream, gas bottle, 2 bottles and postage was £17.50 so it was a bargain! When you go to car boot sales look for the proper gas cartridges, they don't usually go for more than £1 and that would mean you can have a spare, filled up gas bottle for when the other runs out.0 -
where can you go to fill them up?
Still searching .....:)
