Horrendous obstinate virus!

Hi
Hope someone can help me. My daughter's picked up an awful virus on her laptop.
It's creating intrusive pop-ups constantly flogging spyware and has even chnaged her wallpaper and screensaver to a 'warning alert'.
I have tired all the programs mentioned on this thread and none have rid it.
Does anyone have anymore suggestions. It's doing my and her head in!
Thanks
Third time lucky on WW I hope :j

Does the image look like this:

If so, you need to follow the instructions here:
    http://www.pchell.com/support/ultimatedefender.shtml

If not, you need to provide more information about the virus, or run the Hijackthis program from the afforementioned sticky you worked through.

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

I used avast pro to remove it although there is a free version too !
Prviously I used norton ( total rubbish)
Failing this reinstall xp or vista whichever you use then scan with avast
    hope this helps

Norton is not Total Rubbish, this is a misconception, it may be a resource hog but the detection rate is very good.

For 50 quid, I'd be after a bit more.

Kaspersky was rated the best of the 12 security suites tested.

    I have that

I've downloaded and run CCleaner, SuperAntiSpyware, Adaware, Spybot, AVG and a couple of others which I can't remember :o I also tried Hijackthis and it showed nothing. I'm halfway through a Kaspersky scan at the mo, it's picked up a couple of things which the others missed.

Thanks for the link, I'll try that when the scan's finished :T

I've mentioned this elsewhere, however it has relevance here. Depending on how the virus was downloaded look at getting a sand box or anti-intrusion software to innoculate the browser used. Hopefully it will stop anything nasty being downloaded (unless someone over rides it).

Can you confirm if you have this virus as shown above?

I fixed it for my dad recently.

There are a few thing that need doing, but thankfully there is a removal tool.

    Let me know

YES, it is a very annoying virus!

I'm not what I have now, there's so much going on

    What's a buffer overrun? I keep getting this -

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

    Program: C:\Windows\Explorer.Exe

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.

When I click 'OK' or close it, my taskbar disappears. If I have a window open then I can carry on with what I'm doing. Once I've closed it, I can't do anything at all and have to use the reset button to restart the pc. All is ok until I open IE, then it all starts again

No it's not.I'm at work now but from memeory It's a blue blackground with red angry writing.
I have tried every single virus buster including kapersky, which did pick up lots of Trojans, but it's still there doing my head in.
I have no idea how my daughter downloaded it but she's a Limewire freak.
We had Nortons installed but clearly it's as much use as a chocolate teapot!

think you answered that yourself, there is often a price to be paid for free music and movies...

it may be a rootkit, which many/most a/v a/s programs just can't pick up, start with the programs here to have a look-see.

change browser from iexplode to firefox, which has an automatic pop up blocker, and is inherently more secure than ie.
check your browser homepage is what you expect it to be

google the name of the software the malware is trying to sell you, you may find removal instructions (not on the site itself, but another tech forum.)

    good luck
