Unable to re-set 3Com Wireless 108 Mbps Router

I hadn't used my router for a while and when I went back to use it Ineed to re-do all the settings. So i logged on using the default password (admin) and set up a new password. I was then kicked out to re-enter the new password before I could go on to set the router up. And this was where the problem started.
I obviously mistyped the password when setting it up and now have no idea what it could be and cannot get in to change it. There is a re-set button for just such a situation which is supposed to be held down for 10 secs.
Well, I have held it down so many times and for up to a minute and it still wont reset to the default (admin). I have been trying for weeks hoping it would work at some point.
This has not been to bad for me as I have a work laptop with a 3G card to use. However, my little brother is arriving tomorrow to stay with me for the week while he does his dissertation for which he will need internet access so I now need this done desperately.
(I have searched on the internet but can't find this issue.)
Your help will be VERY much appreciated. If I can't get it to work, then I thought I would have to get a modem which he could use until i could fix this. In case I need to do this are there any ones (cheaper pls) that are very easy to set up and that I could pick up tomorrow?
Thank you

don't know if it would help upgrading/resetting the firmware? some routers have an option to completely reset everything to factory defaults during upgrade (netgear/d-link that i know of)
try variations of the reset button, 30 secs with power in,30 secs with it out, holding the button while plugging in...
reading a bit about 3com routers, looks like it may be worthwhile removing the phone cable when resetting.Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0
