spoke to someone the other day who said a few people in their area are looking to move nearer to the city due to the fact that petrol has become so expensive they dont want to live in the country and spend a fortune commuting.
Have house prices in the country in your area gone down drastically?

The average woman would rather have beauty than brains,
because the average man can see better than he can think.
Many people's view of the world is down to their experience, perception and what they have been conditioned to,this isnt any old MSE reply this is a important and experienced MSE reply :rotfl:

???
Living in the country is as much about quality of life as anything. There are numerous reasons that I live away from the city, petrol prices won't be enough to force me to move. I would buy, and in fact have bought, a smaller car with better fuel consumption before I moved back to the city  Yuck!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

I think someone is pulling your p****er0 -
It would depend how far they're travelling etc really.
And "the country".... do you live inside the M25? Because there's a lot of "the country" out there ... and it's all different you know.
Some people think they're "in the country" just 3 miles from a town. Others are 100 miles from anything vaguely civilised and could be driving 60 miles each way each day.
I don't know if I am in the country. I am in a green bit 2 miles from a city centre. that's the country to some0 -
I wish.................
Not quite yet at the stage where I am considering harnessing my Shetlands to a cart, but shut my eyes when filling the car so I can't see the pounds clicking over faster than the fuel gauge!
Joking aside it is an issue. I can't see it affecting house prices just yet, but you never know. Certainly proximity to amenities is one of the things on our house list, when isolation would have been a factor in the past. We had a 25 mile drive to the nearest supermarket in Scotland and whilst that sort of drive wouldn't totally put me off a house it would be a issue now.
Personally I suspect the more isolated the better when the oil runs out..........0 -
Petrol is £1.07 here.
For somebody doing a regular commute for a regular 9-5 Mon-Fri journey (exc holidays/bank hols) this might mean a petrol bill equivalent to £4k of their basic salary per year in petrol alone.
In 2002 when it was about 75p it will have cost them probably about £3k of their annual basic salary.
So mathematically it can't be just that. Unless there are two of them making separate journeys. Then it's like setting fire to an income of £10k/year just for petrol.0 -
I'm delighted to say that I started commuting by bike just over a year ago. I worked out the other day that over those 12 months I have covered more miles by pedal power than by car. I sold my £20k car, bought a banger runaround and paid off about a third of my mortgage. It's saved me a small fortune in depreciation, insurance, maintenance, fuel, tax, parking and interest!! I reduced my mortgage term from 15 years remaining to only 8.
The extra mars bars cost me loads though.0 -
No sign of prices dropping round here, despite diesel reaching 118.9p/l ( No wonder so many are willing to break the law with red diesel). The "FTB" section of the property pages is full of properties from £220k...who are they kidding...They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0

Property prices are stable and even increasing slowly, diesel is 116.9 at the local independant garage.0

I know! That's at the nearest (independent) garage in the next village, but I've now started to take a different route to work so I can fill up somewhere slightly cheaper (not red
