Money in overseas current account

Hi there, I've just discovered my girlfriend has about $2000 in a US current account which is leftover from her time living there as a student about 4 years ago!
I have made her see sense that it is no good to her over there and it would be better in one of her english accounts earning interest.
Does anyone know what would be the most efficient way of transferring it over here? I guess if she called the US bank asking to close it they would post her a cheque - can you pay dollar cheques into a UK current account? If so are there hefty charges?
Her best option might even be to withdraw it gradually from a hole in the wall but she can't remember her PIN - nothing to stop her getting a new one though I suppose.
Ideas welcome! Thanks.

If I had a pound for every time I didn't play the lottery...

Use Telegraphic Transfer (SWIFT), this costs about 20 pounds ($40) but it is safe and quick. The process is similar to CHAPS.

Get the US bank to issue a certified cheque drawn in USD or GBP (if it has a UK branch). Most UK banks accept foreign cheques at a charge of about 12 quids.0
