Xbox Live Connection - Advice Please?

Hi,

I have just bought an xbox 360, and am wanting to connect to xbox live. My computer is in a different room and I have a sky router (sagem), the ethernet lead which I got with the xbox won't stretch to the other room - so am a bit puzzled what my options are now... and even if they were in the same room - what would I do? plug the eternet cable into Port 2 on the back of the router?... and would it automatically connect?.

I have looked thru the full instructions manual and its not very helpful (ok maybe I have a mind block with this sort of thing  ) ..

Please help ! :A

Ok OP you have 2 options, option 1 you can either buy another ethernet cable and use that to connect, yes you would just plug it into a spare port on your router, on the 360 i would set the 360 to automatic so it will get te ip, dns etc itself, or option 2 is you can buy a 360 wireless adapter like this http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/719752/Official-Xbox-360-Wireless-Adaptor/Product.html to connect to your router wireless, the cable is cheaper whereas the adapter is £55

how far away is the room where the router is in

or you could use something similar to these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Devolo-dLAN-duo-Starter-Ethernet/dp/B000BK87G8/ref=pd_bbs_5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1206895003&sr=8-5,
the aboev are homeplugs which you plug into your mains and the wireless signal is sent through the mains

    Thanks C_Ronaldo...

Ideally I would be putting the Xbox in my Son's bedroom but thought because there is no phone plug in there that that wouldn't be an option... but maybe it is ??

If not, I would have the xbox downstairs, and the current router is in a upstairs bedroom - so quite a way..

With the Xbox wireless adaptor - would I just plug that into Port 2 on the router next to the PC and the X box would work from any room ??

Its all very complicated to me - and I really appreciate your advice.

Sorry - I really am terribly oblivious to all this techie stuff!.

it depends on what your budget is,

the xbox 360 adapter would plug into the back of your 360 so you can have the 360 in any room u like,

the fact theres no phone socket in your sons room doesnt matter at all,

Once again thanks for your help.

I would pay the extra for ease of use. If there was 'no budget' - which one would you recommend?

I don't have wireless broadband on my PC - is this something I need to consider?

id recommend the 360 wireless adapter purely because it means theres no wires trailing down the stairs, i use it myself and its easier in the long run, it depends if your router is wireless which if it is then you could get the 360 adapter as linked to in a previous post, if the router isnt wireless then you would need to buy an adsl wireless router plus the 360 adapter, you would then place the router next to your modem,

If it were me, I would just go and buy a 20m ethernet patch cable and run it from the back of the 360 to the router. Then thats it. Done.

Wireless great and all that it is, will need setup and may have problems with signal and security. If you or someone handy you know can lay a telephone extenstion cable, then laying a ethernet cable is just the same and will cost less than a tenner from a good (not mainstream eg pc world) compter shop.

thats why i gave the op 2 options, i chose to buy the wireless adapter as my 360 is upstairs and the wireless router is downstairs so to me it made sense that i get teh 360 adapter rather than having to have a cable trailing down the stairs and then through 2 rooms to the router, there was also the safety issue which i considered when i considered buying the wireless adapter, yes if the router is in the room next to where the 360 is then the cable option is better as the 2 rooms are next to each other

Just to give another option, what about a Homeplug?

You'd need a wall (power) socket near the router, and one near the xbox. The Homeplug units plug straight into the socket and are connected to the router and Xbox respectively, and turn your home's power circuit ring main into a data network, thus extending your ADSL connection to wherever you want or need it!

If you don't plan on transferring any data (between the computer and Xbox), then a basic 14Mb set will give you about 6Mbps realistically over your power lines. If you do plan on transferring data, then there are faster, more expensive models available too.

So you get a nice secure wired network with a reliable connection, with no wires running down the stairs and no need for extra cabling!

I got my sister some Netgear ones, which are very good. I think it was these ones.
The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with.
