Benefits and NI contributions- advice needed

Hello everyone,
My name is Katye, 4 years ago I was called into the DWP fraud office to discuss undeclared savings?.. over £14,000 ! it was horrendous as I don';t have savings I am disabled, cut a long story short, my NI number name and DOB are either being shared or its an identity theft. I was devastated and felt like a crimimal as I taped under caution.
The bank who declared the savings accounts sent all the details to the Inland revenue, who in turn called contacted the DWP. I rang the back ( barclays) who when I gave my details they stupidly gave me all the account details it was my name !, only this person was in Jersey and I'm not, so I knew then it was a mistake. Bottom line, Barclays admitted a mistake had been made and an apology sent, DWP dropped the case.
However last week I had a letter from the NI contributions at the IR .. I rang them and gave my NI number and name address and DOB, they said once again I had failed the security questions none of them tied up, the form they wanted me to complete wants to know my life history which is why I called them after getting this letter.
Has anyone ever been mixed up with another person via NI numbers as this has made me so ill, as it did 4 years go.
I really don't know where to go from here, I'm not completing the forms and have called the fraud at the DWP again who came over to my home to check the forms weren't a scam, they arn't but look very amateur.
sorry to ramble but I am horrified to be under scrutiny again.
Thank you
Katye

Hi Katye,
Welcome to MSE.
If the DWP or HMRC have asked that you complete the noted forms, you do need to do so. Your benefits could be affected if you do not do so xGone ... or have I?0 -
Hello, thank you for your reply the man from the DWP has taken all the forms away and is liasing on my behalf. I should just point out , I was never with the Barclays bank which was scary, and was slightly worrying that by giving my name and NI number on their customer services line they gave me details of another person with the same name, which is why I am hesitant to give all my details when a mistake has been made once before. If I can find out all about a person ie their address's bank account numbers, and its a mistake I'm not prepared to complete any forms until this is sorted out. Its their mistake, but I wondered if anyone else had had the same issue. Barclays bank did actually give me the tape recording of my conversation when I rang the customer helpline, which showed their lapse in security. I understad my money may get stopped if the form isn't completed, but even the HMRC said its not the sort of letter we would send out asking where we you have lived since you were 15 years old,- they should know that, I am 40 now !0

I have known someone have a mix up with their national insurance number before, his work had written it down wrongly years before (I think they may have switched two numbers or something stupid like that) and he'd then used hispayslip to get his national insurance number from then on, so naturally had been giving the incorrect one to everyone. It was only when he went to claim benefit and we realised he wasn't a woman living in London that it came to light.
I would ask DWP for a letter for you to give to the IR explaining what happened before because likelihood it is the same person - whether innocently as above or something else.0 -
Thank you Claire- The DWP have taken all my paperwork, but in panic I never copied it ! Ironically the only person who has helped me so far is the fraud investigator who was at my house within 15 minutes of me ringing him he was worried that it was scam and aware of the previous incident, but I said I don't want to end up back here again. I am disabled and also have PTSD and its accelerated my illness tenfold.
I should explain, the reason for my fear is that I was a witness in a court case and had to be moved to a secret address so I hope you can appreciate how this has affected me- knowing this is hanging over my head with my personal details out there, that could be given out by mistake to all and sundry.0 -
I have completed the forms as much as I can remember they want to know where I lived from the age of 15!.. the DWP seem to think I have been mixed up with another person with the same name same as before.
Stress? omg!!!0
