stop over, flight change question

Looking for some flights to Atlanta at the end of May, a few of the good prices have flight changes in new York, but I was wondering, is it alot more expensive to turn that change into a stop over for a few days, or is it just not worth doing, surely if they are sending us to NY to change flights then would a few days either side make any difference?
what would be the best way to find out a price rather than just searching for completely seperate flights myself??

I'm having the same problem, crazy....I am flying to the US at the end of May & they just put up flight prices. If you shop around you should be able to find flights for less than £400 though.
I would suggest going to the Travel Agent and asking about the stop-over. I got a cheaper deal than anything I could find on the internet like that a couple of years ago.
If I were in your position I would search for stop-overs, gather those prices, and then check out direct flights to NYC and back. Book an internal flight with an American website to get to Atlanta: More often than not these are so much cheaper than anything we can get here in the UK! I would suggest cheaptickets.com or checking the US airline websites directly (United and Delta seem to be competitive at the moment.)

thanks, will go and do some research, tried all the sweeping sites and not having much luck getting a sub £400 flight, what site do you use, used all the ones Martin has suggested.
Was trying to fly midweek from a Scottish airport so that might be why its more expensivesomething missing0 -
gemmacarolyn, check out the continental airlines website, they show flights with changes but offer a wide number of hours of stop overs, including an overnighter in my case, £450 for a flight to NY, gets in about 3pm and leaves 6.30am the next morning so a night out in NY, plus coming back arrive NY early am and leave in the evening so a full day, definately worth considering as its the same price as the direct flights?something missing0

Use the multi city search option (most of the carriers have them), you should get a free or discounted connection then.0
