The excess fare I was issued with was for the difference between non-discounted and the railcard discounted ticket.

You can of course arrive at the station and purchase on the day a family railcard discounted ticket.

Why would they not offer a saver/supersaver, assuming an off-peak train? These are walk on tickets - no quotas, no advance purchase requirements.

I don't know - am only talking from experience! x

Don't know why, maybe it's meant as a deterrent? It does say in the Ts and Cs there might be a penalty fare imposed as well if you transgress the rules.

There is a difference between buying a ticket at the station, and on the train. They penalise people who don't pay until they are on the train, basically because they think such people are trying to avoid paying.

Can we buy a ticket for out 2 year old who will be travelling with us? Works out cheaper to buy on family railcard for 3 then without for just 2 adults.

Yes, it's the last paragraph in the t&cs above .

"If the only child in the Family Railcard group is aged under five years, the Railcard holder must purchase a discounted ticket for that child in order for the Railcard holder(s) to qualify for the discount on their tickets".
