Best long term place to put ￡２０K

Can anyone please recomend the best place to put about ￡２０K for long term investment. I am a non tax payer.
I had about ￡17K in a savings account at 6.55% its now worth about ￡２０K but its ending soon, so I`ve been thinking about all the options. There are plenty of accounts about the same but should I do better somewhere else?
I have been reading about some Bonds but dont know where to start, any suggestions?
I have also considered buying Gold and or Silver but would prefer less risk/retern.
