IE Hijacked

One of our children downloaded Limewire and since then we have had major problems. We managed to get rid of 2 x Trojan virii but we now have continual problems with IE being hijacked. We have run CCleaner, Adaware and Spybot several times (in Safe Mode) but none appear to cleanse the problems. Some of the sites being opened are:

www.admedia365.com
www.ad.bannerconnect.net
www.ad.yieldmanager.com
www.32vegas.com

I have run Hijackthis - see below. I cannot spot anything myself but would appreciate some advice. The laptop is running Vista Home Premium.

    then download and install

    www.superantispyware.com

the free version on the blue button

install, then update , then do a "complete scan" , and then fix the problems it finds, letting the PC reboot if requested.

then post a new hijackthis log and let me know if you still have problems

If you must run a Windows system, you will continue to get viruses and spyware. However many times you use programs to clean them off your system they will come back.

Unless you use a program like SpywareBlaster, which prevents them from installing in the first place.

Hi Browntoa. I followed all your instructions. The Superantispyware programme found and cleaned two Vundo Variant/Resident entries. I rebooted and logged on to the net via IE. Unfortunately, the errors returned and our AVG detected two virii:

    Virus found lop - hctp[1]
    Virus found lop - ptch[1]

They were quarantined and I have deleted them. IE is still being hijacked and I keep getting pop-ups. My new hijack log is:

This one is very suspect. Don't know what particular malware it is, but anything that runs from your temp folder is always suspect.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic18610.html

    Removal Steps:
    1. Please print these instructions as they will be needed later when Internet access is not available.
    2. Save these instructions in word or notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found.
    3. Download Vundo Fix and save it to your desktop.
    4. When it has completed downloading, double-clickVundoFix.exeto run it.
    5. Click the Scan for Vundo button.
    6. Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    7. You will now receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click the YES button. Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    8. When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click the OK button.
    9. When the computer has shutdown, turn your computer back on.
The WinFixer and Vundo infection should now be removed from your computer.

If you are still having a problem then please perform the following steps.

This step should only be used if the instructions in the previous steps did not remove the infection:
    1. Download VirtumundoBegone and save it to your desktop.
    2. Now reboot into Safe Mode.
      1. This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
      2. You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
      3. Select safe mode with networking using your arrow keys on the keyboard and then press enter.
      4. When you computer reaches the desktop make sure you log in as the same user which you had performed the previous steps,
    3. Once you are logged into safe mode, double-click VirtumundoBeGone.exe file you just downloaded and follow the instructions.
    4. Exit when it has finished, and reboot back to normal mode.

Hi Browntoa, Many thanks for you help - I have now resolved the issue. Unfortunately, the two removal tools didn't work - they both did not detect the Vundo malware. Upon surfing the web (on another PC of course) I came across the Kapersky online Virus Scanner. This managed to detect the vundo malware together with about 25 other virus/malware issues. (These were not found by AVG, CCleaner, Spybot or Adaware !!). So I downloaded a 30 day trial of Kapersky v7 and ran a full scan which successfully detected and deleted all the problems. We've been running OK for about 4 hours and are pretty confident that we have rid ourselves of the virii/malware. A stunning valedictory for Kaspersky really. Once again many thanks for your help and efforts.
