Has anyone mentioned scraping the paper on top of the spread in a tub?

And, at the end, trying to get every last molecule of spread out of the tub?

Replacing my 1 pint beer and juice glasses with cheap (ie. 99p +P&P on eBay) 250ml/half pint beer and juice glasses, so that I drink less, put on less weight and the beer and juice goes twice as far and costs me half as much over time.

Just finished making lemon chutney from all the lemons from the freezer - saved from everytime I needed lemon juice/zest etc It tastes lovely and think it will go great with curries and fish. Got to work out if I have left it too late to collect nettles to dry for nettle tea.

Ok I have a couple, sorry if I am repeating anyone, I haven't had time to read all 115 pages yet ;)

Crusts- save them and at the weekend they can be used to make toasted sandwiches, far better than fresh bread. Also use a "george forman" style grill you can do all your sandwiches at once. Don't margie the outside it stops them going greasy tasting and saves marg

Packet rice- bachelors etc, you know the packet flavoured stuff. Mix in half as much again of ordinary rice, really bulks out the quantity and tones down the flavour (nicer)

Banana skins- Don't buy expensive wart cream or freezing spray, cut a small piece of banana skin and place on wart (fleshy bit to the wart) cover with a plaster, allow the banana to go black. It will kill the skin and wart and can be repeated as many times as you like, till the wart has gone..........not sure if it works on verrucas but worth a try

Good tips! I've I'm working at home I fill a thermos with coffee first thing rather than keep on boiling the kettle. I also have two different types of porridge/hot oats. I use value porridge which takes longer to cook at weekends and days at home and only use more expensive quicker cooking oats on work days.

I love the tip about turning the cooker off early. A great tip with electric cookers that take hours to cool down (and heat up!)

i make porridge in a tupperware insulated thingee. I pout the oats in cover with boiling water put the lid on and leave 10 mins then I add syrup and eat!!! No elec required. I learnt this in a lakeland plastics mag they have readers tips some are invaluable.

I always peel veg over shetts of newspaper then sruch the whole lot yp and put in compost heap, saves cleaning up and reuses newspapers too!

Madcatgirl, if you want to have very fast cooking ordinary "cheap" porridge, similar to the "Oatso whatever" packets then a simple way to do this is to pour about half full of oats into the blender/processor and whizz until very nearly powdered. You could add some sugar to this initially but I've found it's as easy to add the sugar later, it can sink out and if you put in your normal amount then whizz it up ... it makes the whole thing too sweet! It's like using icing sugar!

Hope this helps someone - it makes a huge difference to the timing and cost of a winter breakfast [or supper!]. Buying those packets for 2 children is a no-no here now we do this. They appreciate being able to serve themselves as much as they want!

Also, if you like muesli the original way but don't have the time, whizz up the oats with the dried fruit and nuts, remember to include dried apple, and this too makes mornings a lot faster and nutiricious. Unfortunately it also makes it rather expensive as they just keep munching it!

    Hope that helps.

Used our National Trust membership today and had a lovely day out - took our own picnic so just petrol there and back to pay for. Saw a lovely book in the gift shop £16.99 - came home - sourced it via Quidco and have bought it for £4.99 plus postage plus Quidco %. What a day - and the sun shone too!!

Have I said this before? Treat weeds on the patio with the last bit of boiling water from the kettle.
