Credit card error

On Thursday 27th March, by telephone, I paid my council tax for the year, using my credit card. This morning I checked my online statement, and to my disbelief, an extra £10,000 is showing as owing on my credit card balance. This is one transaction to the council. Obviously the person who has keyed in the payment has added an extra zero to the pound figure, resulting in this massive amount showing on our credit card. Where are the checks?

I cannot contact the council as it's weekend but I did contact the credit card provider. Our credit limit for the card is £2000, and the council's error makes us £9000 over limit! The person I spoke to said that the amount would be declined as it's over the limit. If this is the case why is it showing as a minus on my account?

I will contact the council on Monday but in the meantime we can't use our credit card, and don't know whether we have paid our council tax or not.

Can anyone advise what else we can do?

Much appreciated.

You cannot be serious. Who on earth pays their council tax in lump sum and puts the debt on a credit card. However perhaps you are planning to pay amount off when you receive the statement. Personally I would sooner pay the council tax on a monthly basis and earn interest on the rest.

The laughable thing is that I dislike direct debits. Call me old fashioned but I prefer to pay bills when they arrive. I know where I am (usually), no-one else but myself or OH can dig away at our current account, reducing the amount without our being aware.

Our credit card bills are paid in full within a week of the amount being shown on screen, before even receiving a credit card bill. We never pay interest. I agree that we could have earned interest while keeping the money in the bank, but prefer keeping on top of bills.

    Certainly nothing wrong in that.
