Repair of Dishwasher to Prevent More Debt

My husband has taken the dishwasher to pieces this afternoon. It packed up almost a fortnight ago because it would not pump water. I am working hard on the debt repayments so he's trying to repair it so that we do not have to buy another. I havent been without a dishwater for about 25 years so this week getting used to the amount of time spent washing up has been quite difficult. I didnt realise that we have dishwasher mentality in this family but no-one re-uses a cup, plate or knife and everyone just plonks the washing up on the work surface for me to deal with
Anyway its quite interesting because our Hotpoint Ultimate Dishwasher is not held together with screws but by plastic catches that make it almost impossible to get open. They dont want you to repair them. However he has opened it up and it has this very heavy closed tray inside it. When he opened it up he found a load of small pebbles. We have been trying to work out the purpose of these, whether for noise prevention or just to make it seem heavier and more expensive.
Im keeping my fingers crossed that it can be repaired.

Gross. He says its blocked by fat. It looks like sludge and slime.Disgusting  Its only five years old but I dont rinse the plates beforehand so its my fault (according to my husband)The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

Is there not a cleaning cycle it recommends? Apparently I'm supposed to run my washing machine at 95C every month to clear grunge out.

Tell him if he doesn't like it then he can load and empty the dishwasher.
Are you a member of Freecycle? www.freecycle.org might be worth putting a want ad up there if he can't sort it.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0 -
I occasionally run an empty cycle and put washing soda in it to clean it but not as often as once a month. Also I dont have temperatures on it, just budget, normal and heavy soil washes. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

Well he's doing a fine job repairing it so I can't complain. Whether it will work or not after I dont know. Freecycle is an option I hadnt thought of. Will wait and see.The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

have a nosey on oldstyle. im sure there's a solution involving bicarb and vinegar that will get the insides sparkling again.
and if worse comes to worst and you have to get a new one, can you sell the old one on ebay for spares?know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
My husband is at present cleaning out all the pipes and tubes under the hot tap. He said it might be the dishwasher cleaner itself but I use Finish powder cubes. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

I cant get onto the local Freecycle site as I am not a member. This has taught me that I must make a point of joining it. Would like a sparkling new dishwasher but now is a very bad time. Dont know about selling parts on ebay. He would probably just dump it at the tip I think. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

depends on the model, but spares and repairs (for local delivery or collection) seem to go from anything £1 to upwards of £20. ok so you're not going to make your fortune off the back of it, but it will earn you more than you'd get for taking it to the tip.know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0

If my dishwasher died then we would have to like it or lump it on the handwashing dishes front, no way would we buy a new or even 2nd hand one while we have debt. Mine is over 5 yrs old and I talk very nicely to it, often, so far its been a star for me....
Hope you can get it sorted
