FLOPPY DRIVE PROBLEMS

I have recently bought a new pc and I seem to have problems when I try to open a floppy disk.
The two messages I receive are "floppy disk is not formatted, or it has been formatted for a Machintosh".
and "A:\ is not acessible. The disk media is not recognised. It may not be formatted".
The floppy disks I am trying to use on my new PC work on other computers so they should be formatted!!
Very strange! Can anyone help before I take a flame thrower to it !!!!!!!!!!!!! PLZZZZZZZZZZZ

Yes from memory I think the green LED is always on!
When opening the floppy disk sometimes I do not receive any message and the egg timer does not go away. Therefore I have to end the task because the programme is not responding.
