Sweet Peas

This is my first year of growing sweet peas and at the moment most of them are a good 3/4 inches high. I know I need to pinch out the tips to make them bushy but was wondering whether this would work as at they moment they look like stem, couple of leaves, more stem, couple more leaves. I was wondering how they would bush out from how they're looking now.

  • Yes that's when you need to do them. Pinch out the top pair of leaves and in their place will grow 2 bits of stems and more leaves. If mine get very leggy I have to be brave and pinch out down to the bottom pair of leaves but that takes all my nerves

Thanks Jack's mummy. Do I just pinch out the leaves or the stem down to the next set of leaves? Also most of them have about three sets of leaves which is why they're quite tall. Should I do it down the the first set of leaves?

  • depends how brave you are really and when you plan on planting them out. If they are staying put for a few more weeks I would probably do them DOWN TO the first set of leaves. Take out the stem and leaves above the first pair. Leaving the first pair of leaves on.

I pinched mine out yesterday morning and tonight I can see where they are reshooting from. They should be nice and bushy by the time they get hardened off and put out

    Does that help?

That's brilliant, thanks. Don't plan on putting them out for a while yet as I've got to decide whether to put them in a pot or in the ground and weed the ground before I do anything.

  • Was just wondering what to do with my sweet peas as they're looking quite leggy. This helps a great deal thanks, I'm going to be brave and go down to the first set of leaves. Wish me luck.

Hi Gladysrocker, just done mine. Hope I haven't done any damage to them especially considering the running joke in our house is that my kill rate is going down or hubby ends up telling the seedlings they're brave :rotfl:
