Open University - exam only option?

Hi,

studying OU at the moment and wondering if there's a cheap option - the books for some course often end up on ebay. Anyone know if it's possible to pay only to do the exam and buy the books and stuff elsewhere?

I'll give them a shout on monday to see, but thought I'd check here in the mean time.

TIA

Damo

Not possible unfortunately - it would sometimes helpful if you could but they wont allow it.

You do benefit a lot from doing the courses in full with them - you'll get the books and the tutor support. Although you can buy the books most people can get the course fees covered in full by the OU which would save you buying the books - In a lot of cases you can also get a £250 grant for expenses.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

This page - http://www3.open.ac.uk/coursefinance/- gives an idea as to whether you can get course fees covered in part/full by the OU. I've done around 15 courses with then and only paid fees for one (On the first course I did I wasn't told I could get the fees paid)

For the most expensive courses(Law and Business) you can get additional funding to cover any extra course fees.

Depending on your level of earnings, you may qualify for £200/yr through an Individual Learning Account http://www.ilascotland.org.uk. Plus the Scottish Gov was giving away £60 bursaries towards Maths & Science courses last autumn, not sure if these are still available.

I suggest you contact the OU office in Edinburgh for local information on funding choices.
