  • What's the price per square foot? That's always a good variable to add to the equation.

Sky News property talk today concluded with; New build flats = slums of the future.

They're today's equivalent of 60's high rises, except the build quality is worse and they're smaller.

  • Hi there, I am in the same situation, thanks for those links ill have a read through them tonight! I am really tempted for the first time buyer initiative down south. Waiting for the right location to come up, but of course they are new builds and i am worried about the drawbacks of these! My mum says the walls are like paper. they expensive to run, noisy and cramped.

It sounds to me like they've learned their lessons from the 60s high rises. A lot of them ended up having to be expensively demolished after a few decades. Some new builds seem to have been designed to fall down on their own accord after a few decades, saving the cost of the dynamite.

As there is no agreed standard for measuring flats price per sq ft means nothing.

ive witnessed the standards of the new builds in manchester & salford and they are shocking.

for example a couple of years ago when we had that big storm, a lot of new builds in salford quays were torn to threads, entire outer walls had been ripped off (which looked liked play wood) leaving the steel skeleton of the building exposed. the scene was reminscent of what you see in these disaster movies with peoples living rooms exposed.

a friend of mine whose dad is behind some of these properties has said in private that they have been made with the cheapest materials and lowest working standards and have a good chance of being pulled down in the future.

out of interest is it manchester you're looking at ? i know someone who I have just about managed talked out of buying into one of the shared ownership schemes.

yeah its bury i am looking at not far from manchester and salford. What were the names of these flats and ill have a look and see if its the same builder. The scheme that i am on is because i have lived in the met. bury for over 10 years. thats why it is such a good bargin. but am still worried. today been told two different sorties from my mates at the pub, one had a flat and hates it because of the next door. because it was new build he didnt know how is neigbours would be but they are c**ts to say the least. the other is so happy with his flat he doesnt see life without it. so its mixed feeelings at the mo.

I carnt remember any flats that have had the fronts ripped off in manchester..but please tell as it will be a warning to all of us.
