In the light of the recent court case involving BT,s d/d charges does anyone know of any landline supplier other then BT that accepts cash/cheque payments and does not already charge extra for this. I couldnt think of any.

The Phone Co-Op will allow Co-Operative Group members to receive an 8% discount, which makes their monthly line rental for non-direct debit payers go down to £10.95/month
Payment options: http://www.phone.coop/payment-methods.html
Discount for Co-Operative members: http://www.co-operative.co.uk/en/beingamember/membersoffers/phoneandinternetoffer/
(you can join the Co-operative group online first if you need to)
The Post Office also offer non direct-debit line rental for £10.95/month - same as the Phone Co-op with the discount.

Check tariffs and usage carefully - because you may end up on a better deal by biting the bullet and paying BT's non-DD surcharge in order to access better rates.0 -

Yes but both of the suppliers you mention still charge extra if you pay by cash/cheque.
I take your point though BT,s virtually free/or free caller display would cost about £1.50p a month with a lot of other supplier,s,and they might charge for inclusive evening and weekend calls.0 -
I personally hate the direct debit system but appreciate it suits some people. It seems that there isn't a good option for a low call user, with no DD, who still wants broadband. If I didn't want broadband I would be cheaper with no landline just using my pay as you go mobile. But I am wondering about pay as you go broadband on 3G, maybe even coupled with something like Skype. I have noticed posts about poor reception in some areas but the 3G Vodaphone (which I use at work) seems to have good coverage here in Glasgow.0
