Have you stopped to consider that your girlfriend may have been trying to help you both to save money? I'd suggest you look into the tariff before cancelling it straight away and it there's a 7 day cancelling agreement then (depending on when it was started) what is the problem?
If I were you, I'd be thanking her (without bringing the word "stupid" in to the conversation!) for doing her best and suggest you both look into it together (on-line) over the weekend. Martin has suggested lately that it's the right time to switch and if your gf has heard this then she was doing her best to help you, quite a wise girl!

Hi,
I have just recently set up as a sole trader in the construction industry & i spent alot of money on advertising. Local papers, i also got a quote from thomson local & signed to an agreement £1100 to go in 2 of there books, i paid a deposit of £130.00 which was included in the £1100, the remainder will be paid off over a 10 month period, starting from when the 1st book is due out in July.
Anyways - after about 10 days or so i changed my mind - the advertising in the papers was bringing plenty of business along with a website called rated people, i couldn't possibly cope with taking on more business without expanding further. Which in my 1st yr i do not want to do. I sent off a letter to thomson local requesting to cancel my agreement as i was still in the 14 day cooling off period by about 2 days at that point. However they didnt recieve the letter until 6 days after the cooling off period had ended. They have even sent me a copy of the envelope i posted the cancelation letter in to confirm the postal date, which said the 11th March - which was 4 days after i had posted it.
They have said i will have to pay canx fees & such - due to there terms & conditions, i recieved a letter today confirming the total amount i owe them is £920.27, of course plus the £130.00 deposit i already paid - means i will of paid them a total of £ £1050.27, about £50 less than if i stay with them.
Is this fair, seen as they have only given me a service for a total of 20 days, i know it maybe in there terms & cons, but its similar to the Banking charges, just because its in there terms & cons doesnt mean to say its right. Surely there is something i can do as at the moment i cannot afford these payments & i was perhaps naive to have signed with them in the 1st place not really being able to afford it.
Thanks - i hope someone can be of help.0 -

You hit the nail on the head!
A contract is a binding legal agreement, and there is nothing you can do within the contract conditions to terminate it.
All you can try is seeing if they will make a goodwill gesture and reduce the termination fee.
You say you now have more work than you can cope with, so presumably your profits are going to be the same as they would have been had the ads actually gone in the directories, and produced the results you originally planned were required?0 -
Yeah, at the time i anticipated thomson local being my only form of advertising once the new books come out, however after speaking to other tradesmen who had done adverts with yell or thomson directories, that the adverts with them are just not enough to bring in good business. And i would need to advertise in local papers as well. Like i said before after advertising with the local papers, i soon realised i did not need to advertise elsewhere, but yeah the profits will of been the same with the directories, however i'm not confident it can bring me in business all yr round. I would need to advertise elsewhere, meaning i would have to pay an extra £100.00 a month. But at the same time i would still be earning the same a week as the only advantage of these extra jobs coming in is that i can be a little more choosy with the work i take on.
Looks like i need to bite the bullet & either give it a go with thomson directories as orig planned or try n see if they would reduce the canx fee as you suggested, i'll speak to there complaints department on Monday & see what can be done.0
