Life Insurance - problems

Hi there,

First time poster, longtime reader. I have a problem with life insurance that I hope someone will be able to help with.

Essentially, I was rejected on my application due to an instance of recreational drug use in the last 12 months and was told categorically I won't be able to source cover.

I'm worried now I will be forever without life insurance as a result of this mistake. I wondered if anyone had any recommendations regarding how I could possibly get cover, whether now or in the future? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Starlett.

  • Start by approaching a broker.
  • I did speak with a broker a few weeks ago and they just suggested I apply again in 2-3 years time when I can prove I'm clean. I guess I'm just trying to ascertain whether this is the only option open to me or whether there's any scope for meeting in the middle..?

The one thing I've realised during this whole episode is how little knowledge I have of the process. The broker I spoke to was of little help and I wanted to pick the brains of others who might be better informed than they.

    Speak to another broker.
Have they tried to get you cover excluding a death by any drug related incident?
eg you die in a car crash (and the tests show no drugs in your system) the L/P pays out but say that you O/D or had an accident with drugs in your system they won't.

Don't forget also that whenever you apply for insurance/assurance you DO mention if asked 'has any policy been declined or special terms applied' the situation even if you have been clean for years.
Don't give any insurance company any excuse not to pay out or leave a mess around for someone else to clean up after your demise.

Not got an answer for you, but this should be something others should be aware of, in a country where atleast half the population is using some sort of recreational drug (be it all the time, weekends or "now and then"..)
