Tried again last night and logged me out, soooo frustrating. Thanks for the tip Tigerfeet and at least I had printed it. Will now attempt in 3 or 4 posts so please bear with me.How does anyone ever manage a diary on here ???
I type it in Word first, then "copy & paste" it to here. Using Word first also makes it easier for me to spell-check it too. :)

'The Brave may not live for ever but the Cautious do not live at all '

If you can spot the film that quote is from you get extra brownie points. Good luck to everyone who is contemplating BR and all those about to go through it. X
That's a great quote. :) It comes from The Princess Diaries & was subsequently used as a title for Survivor a few years later.

I don't think there's a Brownie uniform on earth that could fit me, but the thought of me trying to get in one did make me laugh, so thanks for that. :D

We are in a similar situation as yourself, but we are moving after we are discharged (hopefully!! :) ) and have already spoken to the RTLU who said to keep the collection solicitors informed as they will still want the IPA and would base it on our standard of living abroad.

Keep them informed as you don't really want something like this to bit you on the bum should you ever come back.. Plus it is the decent thing to do :)
  • Having made the decision re BR I now seem to be in a tizz as to what order to do everything in. Trying to do this the 'right way' but also the best way for me as have done the right thing all my life and hey, look where it's got me.

First things first, this is the first month I have stopped paying the mortgage can anyone tell me roughly how long I have got before they start repossesion proceedings and exactly what they will do and in what order. Because I am not going to rent a property here unless I have a sudden brainstorm and change my mind I really want to stay in this house until the moment of departure. Ironically, got a bit of a payrise which foolishly made me think that I could perhaps sell the house and go back to original plan of paying debt of. Not a chance sadly. Spoke to Estate Agent who advised that in order to sell would have to reduce the house to 180k, bought it for 175 k 3 years ago and have spent at least 30 k on it. Amount owed to Northern Rock 220k so that's not really an option.

Back to Plan A which is new life abroad. Now have to make decision as to when to go BR as planning to leave early July. Do you think I could put it off until early June ? When completing forms do I put in monthly mortgage payment although I will not have paid it for a couple of months (need something to live on out there until I get sorted)?

Re IPA They will probably work this ouut on my salary at time of BR which may well now show about 200 surplus with payrise. Is it right that it usually takes a few months to implement and they dont backdate it. If so, by the time they do this my income abroad will be considerably less and hopefully they will revise accordingly.

Sure there are more things I need to think of but trying not to get logged off so will finish for now.
  • Just wondering if anyone had any answers to these questions.

Thought of another one too, do you think the OR will accept a po box address initially as I don't know where I will be living until I get out there. Will stay with friends for a couple of weeks but would not want them getting post from the OR. Will be able to give them a mobile number and an email address to keep in contact and hoping that will be acceptable to start with.

Such a lot to sort out and hard to know where to start. This forum really helps but do wish I had a Fairy Godmother too !

Hi, how long an IPA takes to set up depends on the circumstances of the case as well as the OR's workload at the time. I know of someone who got their IPA agreement four weeks after going BR, but their case was very straightforward, they'd provided all their bank statements etc. There are many people who've been told that they'll be getting an IPA, but are still waiting for the details three months later.

As for using a PO Box address, you'd probably need to speak to your OR about that. I can't remember where I saw it, but I don't think they'll accept it - they'll accept BFPO addresses for the armed forces, but an ordinary PO box address could be used to hide someone's true location or deliberately make it harder for them to be found (I'm not saying you'd be using it for that reason). Even if they did accept it, it would only be on a very temporary basis - questions might be asked as to how someone is managing to support themselves in a new country, yet isn't in a stable enough situation to accept mail at a regular address.
