Do I varnish or paint first?

Hi All,
I am decorating a room that has wooden beams and walls/ceiling to be painted.
I am going to strip, varnish the beams and paint the walls/ceilings.
My question: Do I paint first or varnish first?
I am concerned about the 'join' between the two.
Thanks,
Pete.

maybe varnish first. easier to clean paint off a smooth surface, and if you get a bit sloppy on the edges of the varnish, you can cover it with the paint. If you paint and can't shift it, then it will show through the varnish.
not an expert at all, just guessing0 -
I agree with lawrie again lol.
When you paint, its always a good idea to have a damp wet cloth with you to wipe off any excess paint.0 -
I concur with both above!
