Economy - long daily commute.

Hi,

I've recently changed jobs and now face a daily round trip of 70-80 miles for work. I currently drive a 2000 (w) Fiat Brava 1.2 16v and am considering my options in terms of economy.

With this level of daily mileage, would I be better off with a diesel? Or another Petrol car?

Obviously I'd prefer not to have to buy a new car, however I'l do so if it will save me money in the long run... In terms of a new car, I'd be looking to p/x my current car and may find another £1000 at the most - what should I be looking for at this price level? (Ideally of a similar size to the Brava, although I would consider a smaller car).

Many thanks in advance. :)

Tricky, if it were me, my concern would be that with only £1000 + px (£800 px??) to play with you'd be quite restricted as to what you could get and the loss in trading vehicles and part exchange may outweigh the benefits.

How many mpg are you getting at the moment?

my mpg is about 30.. :)
  • 30mpg is pretty good. Face it, a 1.2 won't be able to pull the skin off a rice pudding. You won't be able to overtake on hills, won't be able to accelerate up steep slip roads getting on the motorway, won't be able to overtake any trucks doing 40 on a NSL road.....

A small engine is only fuel efficient if you drive it slowly - thrash it and you'd be better off with a 1.6.
    Happy chappy
