HSBC/FD Error

A 3rd party used old paying in slips to pay money into my FD account at a HSBC branch. They were told that the account had been closed and then were given my new account details.

I called FD and explained this and they are investigating and said it could take some weeks to find out what happened.

Obviously, that is a clear breach of Data Protection by giving out my details to a 3rd party?!?

Has anyone else had this problem?

I explained to FD that if I hadn't known the 3rd party I could've been subject to fraud, but no-one seems to think it's a big deal.

Didn't you want the money then??
  • Everytime you give a "3rd party" a cheque you give them your account details. I can't see the problem, it is not as if they gave out details of your balance.

  • When you say 'given'-was it physically written down for them-or did the person who was on the counter just credit the account?

They were told that the account was closed, when it was closed and what happened to the account and then said that I had an account with FD.

They then proceeded to write the FD account details onto the paying in slip and gave them another slip with the account details on the back of it - saying it was for future reference.

When someone has your account details they can set up DDs and alsorts on the account, this was proven when they guy from Top Gear gave his account details on the telly and someone set up a DD for a few thousand pounds from his account.

FD called today to say that the details should never have been written and given out as people paying money in, shouldn't have any information about my account and said they need to investigate further.

They also blocked my account for a few hours to check that it was all fine and made me re-do security again. I think that was overkill, but what can you do! :)
