Vista Network Problems!!

Recently bought myself a Dell Laptop with Vista Home Premium. It is connected wirelessy to my main pc which runs Windows XP Professional i have two problems with networking.

Problem 1
Using my Vista Laptop I am able to view and access all of folders and files on the XP Pc that are shared.

Using my XP PC I am able to view all of the folders that are shared on the vista laptop but only access files in the 'Public' folder. When i try to open any private folders i get access denied.

I have set the network as a private network and to allow file sharing and print sharing. I have also shared the specific folders to everyone and they appear as shared network folders and shared netowrk files in the vista tool 'Network and Sharing Center'

I have no password and use the administrator account on both pcs. I have tried everything but im lost now.

Problem 2
I have an all in one printer connected to the xp pc. I am able to print from my laptop using the network. However i have no way scanning as the all in one is just seen as a printer, not a separate printer and scanner. I tried searching the net and using microsoft help but all they say is go to the network folders locate the scanner and click install. However as the scanner is not spearta it does not appear in the network. The All in One is an Epson Stylus CX3200. I have tried the webiste and have downlaoded the avaible drivers but none have helped the situation.

Any help is much appreciated.
Also to note Vista is way to simplified and im not sure how i like it compared to XP. Grpahics are nice but for funcitionality its **** :p

  • Hiya,

Firstly, you shouldn't be using the administrator account to logon, especially in Vista. You should create a separate user account.

I've just been playing with my vista vm and from what I can see you need to do the following.

On the Vista PC you need to go into 'Network and Sharing Centre' and turn on 'Network Discovery' & 'File Sharing'. You can select 'Make the network I am connected to Private' when prompted.

Now locate the folder you want to share. Right click it, and click 'Share'.

This is the part I'm not clear on. On the window that pops up saying 'Choose people to share with', I think you need to select 'Everyone' and click 'Add', then 'Share'. This worked for me.

I tried just leaving the default user in there but when I tried to access the share, I was prompted for a username a password and then presented with an empty folder when I entered them.

Only when I added 'Everyone' did it show me the shared folder and contents.

As for your second problem. I don't think you're going to be able to use the scan facility accross a share unless the software allows it. Have you installed the full software package for the printer on the Vista laptop?
