Advice and inspiration required!

Here's the situation.

It was my birthday this week and I received some money from family/in-laws and I'm looking for something to spend it on! I've got £100 by the way

I'm 35 and reasonably well off, so I tend to buy things as and when I need them. I don't want just spend it on a night out but if I leave it in my wallet thats what will happen!

So I'm looking for inspiration. I'd like something tangible to show them and I thought I'd post here because I like gadgets and techie stuff.

If you've bought anything recently around the £100 mark and think its the business....let me know!

To get you started I already have....Wii, DS Lite with R4DS, PVR.

Any help - much appreciated!

  • Hi, It depends what you like, why not put it in the bank then take your time surfing around gadget sights, or next time you've got time have day in the city! Treat yourself at the same time. Don't know much about technical stuff. but I guess you know what you like, and when you do see ,it you will be able to just get there and then. Perhap's hi definition dvd player?

if you are reasonably well off why not do what i do sometimes. why not put some money to it and get something more expensive than £100? that frees up more choices. if i was you i would be getting a ps3. xbox 360's are good but i already have one of them and it does seem like retailers and game developers are slowly begining to focus on the ps3 and the wii.

Would a Sat Nav be useful, unless you already have one? They start at around £100 for a decent Garmin or Tom Tom.

You could get Wii Fit and Mario Kart for £100, they're both out int he next few weeks.

    A new MP3 player?

I got a rather nice, used, Apple Mac Mini off eBay for £230. I made sure it had the "Superdrive" (for burning DVDs), enough memory (1GB minimum) and the largest Hard Drive (80GB for the G4 model). For slightly more you could get an Intel model that will also run Windows (if you are feeling masochistic or simply like a challenge!)

Blimey this is spooky. Im just a little older than you and it was also my birthday last week. I had the exact same conversation in work the other night as to what to buy with my birthday money. I cant believe you are thinking about gadgets etc as thats the exact words I used "I wanna gadget or something".

Like you I seem to have most of the things I need and I was struggling so rather unexcitedly I bought myself a nano wireless mouse for the laptop with the tiniest usb reciever youve ever seen, 2gb of ram (made a big difference), a 1 hour battery charger and some rechargeable batteries. Not very exciting I know but all quite handy things. Do you have an Ipod or if you do a decent speaker dock?

Finally cant believe we are both Stans!! Either very spooky or my work mates on a wind up.
    You killed me scooter!!
  • Many thanks to all the replies - given me some ideas.

I do have a satnav - but it is playing up so a new one could be an option!

Was thinking of an X-box but now not sure.....agree the PS3 might be the way forward with the blu-ray player.

Had a good look on firebox to see if anything there takes my fancy. I do fancy a wireless music streamer like the Roku soundbridge if anyone has any opinions?

Not got an LCD Tv yet - so could put it towards that.....!

Got a 30 gig ipod - could upgrade but it does what I want to be honest.

And Stan.....not a wind up mate - we must be just be like-minded!! Judging by your sig, we're both Quadraphenia fans too!

Great film! Really spooky! Dont tell me you're also a handsome sex god with a 6 pack that drives the girls mad as that would be going too far:rolleyes:

Back to reality:D Sod the Xbox and go for a ps3.

it does seem like retailers and game developers are slowly begining to focus on the ps3 and the wii.

    Why do you say this?

I'm continually confused..people say this stuff the whole time and yet I really haven't seen anything to support it...You look on play.com and stuff and most of the time 4 or 5 of the top 10 games are on the 360, maybe 2 on wii, 2 on ps3 and 2 on DS, something like that...

Any articles I've read (not many lately, I admit) still seem to indicate that game developers prefer coding for the 360...And the strong exclusive content continues to show support for the 360 (the DLC for GTA4, for example).

Not having a go, nor trying to stir up a typical sony vs ms topic, just wondering why you feel this shift.

For what it's worth, my money would still go on the 360, hands down (and *believe me* - I'm having issues with MS at the mo, so am hardly their biggest fan). I'm an online gamer. The 360's better for online games, it's that simple. If I want, down the line, a blu-ray, I imagine I'll buy one. Not a big deal.
