Bara Brith (speckled bread to the non-welsh)

    450g (1lb) mixed dried fruit
    300ml (1/2 pint) tea
    2 tbsp marmalade
    1 egg, beaten
    6 tbsp soft brown sugar
1 tsp mixed spice (or cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and all spice)
    450g (1lb) self-raising flour
    honey to glaze
    1. Soak the fruit overnight in the tea.
    2. Next day, mix the marmalade, egg, sugar, spice and flour. Spoon into a greased 900g (1lb) loaf tin and bake in a warm oven (gas 3, 325ºF, 170ºC) for one and three quarter hours or until the centre is cooked through. Check from time to time that the top doesn’t brown too much, and cover with a sheet of foil or move down a shelf in the oven if necessary.
    3. Once cooked, leave the Bara Brith to stand for 5 minutes, then tip out of the tin on to a cooling tray. Using a pastry brush, glaze the top with honey.
    4. Serve sliced with salted butter and some tasty farmhouse Cheddar. Store in an airtight tin.
    5. actually storing in an airtight tin is a complete waste of time. You'd be better off standing in the centre of kitchen armed with rolling tin to prevent the famished hordes munching their way through the entire thing before its cooled. Hence why I make 2.

Tesco have finally let me place an online order. All £50.99 of it (plus £3.75 delivery). Minus a £10 voucher for spending £50.

Lots of 1/2 price goodies and Tescos own concentrated washing liquid is currently 2 for £3. The 2 in 1 with fabric conditioner is also at that price. Using 3/4 the recommended amount means that I get 25 washes to a bottle for £1.50 or 6p a wash. you did read that right! Sorry just can't convince myself to use soap nuts and acid (sorry vinegar) in my washing machine.

Obviously the neighbours aren't going to be very impressed. I saved 24p by opting for the 9-11pm slot. Hopefully they'll arrive closer to 9 than 11 !

    Yum bara brith...love it!

Another £14.84 spend for me...I seem to be whizzing through this money this month. Freezers are getting nicely full, tho. ;)

Had to spend some of that on veg seeds as I've realised I didn't have all I needed.. the list keeps getting longer and longer.

Emptypurse - our farmers market is like that.. lovely but very expensive. I'm treating myself to a trip there on Saturday just to check it out again...maybe get some lovely fresh eggs and see if the one and only cheap veggie stall is still there. :p

    Off to update my siggy.

Can I join please? Can someone tell me what is realistic cost for 2 adults and 2 kids per month or per week? Where should I start? What should I work towards? Buying a house (always rented so not really noticed/bothered too much about food costs and do not really know what they are)

Shall I keep receipts? Shall I start now before the house sale goes through? Shall I stop buying the WW ready meals and Baxters soups?

It is just some things like the korma sauce I bought yesterday BOGOF was £1,29 and for that I could not buy all the ingredients needed, make it for that price.

Any help for a newbie would be gratefully appreciated. I eat a huge amount of fresh fruit and veg to keep the weight loss I have achieved, none of the family like red meat, mince etc we only eat chicken as a meat or I eat quorn, tofu. I am diabetic so don't waste money on choc, sweets, have banned crisps, pies, white bread, biscuits, much to the kids dismay but saves the weight and the cost:D

I love korma too and would love a recipe for a korma sauce if anyone has one

Erm, well, I'm about half way through my month, 15 days to payday, and I'm over budget already :o I didn't realise how low stocks were in my freezer in particular so I've had to buy lots of frozen veg. I will admit to not having been quite as careful with other things as I could have been, had a friend staying for a few days and didn't feel I could be too mean!

On the positive side I did quite a lot of veg planting on Saturday (before I got snowed on), can't wait for it all to grow.

Soo... attempt at low budget of £40 failed, but was unrealistic I think... will try very hard to stay under £50 though!

I have a week off from the PC and what do I find 40 plus pages to catch up on!!!

Not had too bad a start to April, spent £50.20 so far and that does include some bits for the boys whilst they are off from school for 2 weeks and will "need"!!!! (their words) some treats; and also some bogofs and half price deals which were too good and will be put away for future use.

Admittedly the bits they wanted were more snacky things to put in their lunch bags for the days they do football courses.

Have been sticking to the menu plan again so far this month, and have already had 5 NSD.

Anybody that wants D/W tabs Co-op has them at the moment box 20/£1.09
that cheaper than Mr T's value ones, also D/W salt @ 49p/bag (both of these are half price if I rememeber right).
    My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
    So we’re empty nesters.
    Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman
