... so prob about 40 -50 quid including taxi home

...if you think it'll come to £50 ish, then can you get a delivery? Maybe you could use a code and get £5 off a £50 spend at asda or tesco, that would cover the delivery charge? You could maybe get a few things for next week that are cheap but heavy, tins of tomatoes etc, or extra pints of milk to freeze...Seems a shame for the taxi driver to get some of your grocery money! Also maybe the little'uns won't see sweet treats to beg you for!

Have you got a freezer? What other kitchen gadgets do you have (microwave, slo-cooker...)

    Do you like baking?

Sound nosy don't I? Just trying to get a picture of what would work for you. Also, you said 'healthily', what kind of healthy did you mean, low-fat, low calorie, or just upping your fruit and veg?

Right, I can either make this http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=739953&highlight=yoghurt+cake
but with blitzed regular sugar and margerine instead of oil

    Or this http://www.cookingbynumbers.com/Recipe_in_one.asp?RecipeID=98
using self raising flour instead of plain and baking powder (this would work right?) - figure I can make a strawberry compote that could be spread on it to use the strawberries up, would probs be quite nice, if a little adventureous? (asking for trouble?)

    Or this http://www.cookingbynumbers.com/Recipe_in_one.asp?RecipeID=130
which looks alsost foolproof, maybe even MrDT proof?

If someone could confirm/deny that self raising will be the same as plain flour plus baking soda that'd be a massive help :) Thanks everyone :D

Right - went to Tesco as I thought about Morrisons but decided it would be a waste of diesel going further. Wasn't very happy when I checked my receipt as the girl on the till forgot to add 10 points for me using my one bags and I also forgot to hand over a couple coupons for extra points having bought tea bags and cooked meat. Went to customer services and a miserable, ignorant manager type bloke said the points couldn't be added after the transaction. So after loading the car up I noticed him walking out of the store....So I went back in, spoke to a nice helpful lady on the cs desk and she added 60 points for me!!!!:j

Spent £100 in Tesco and £13 in the butchers so I now have £3 left if my calculations are correct! We have plenty of food to last til the 30th but just hope we don't need too much milk. If I hadn't bought all that washing liquid yesterday (6 months worth) I would have £20 left so not too worried.

Making my first ever home made lemon cheesecake for tomorrows pudding along with a self saucing chocolate pudding (very easy) as m&d are back from their hols and coming round for roast chicken.

Hope you all have a good weekend.

I want one of those butchers hook type things to hang my pots on as space is at a premium in my small galley kitchen, so will see if Mr T can supply that.

We ran out of wall & cupboard space in our minute kitchen, so we hung an ikea rail from the ceiling in front of the window. Works really well, we manged to fit 3 saucepans, 2 frying pans and a stock pot on it.

One week til pay day and I can start the challenge properly. Can't wait, how sad am I?

Had to use up some broccoli today, made some pepper, broccoli & pesto pasta. It went down well, even with dd who usually declares all veggies apart from carrots as disgusting. Will have to do that again.
Thanks to all the lovely people on here I have managed to cut my hours down to 2 days a week, allowing me to spend more time with my gorgeous Children. :j

    Hi all
Just discovered this site. Following a recent conversation with friends I realised that we spend about half of what they do on their weekly shop. We spent £46.00 in Tesco today and we try and stick to £200 per month. That is for 2 adults and a 4 and 2 year old.

Are we doing ok or do you think we could save more? I went to Aldi last week and spent £39 but had to get a few bits in the week so probably about the same overall.

Off to read some more of the thread now,

    Thanks
    Alison

We have a similar family set-up and spend about the same. I feel as if £200 is a figure we can't realistically get much lower. However would be interested what others think. Some people do spend a fortune on food. I can only assume they are on much higher income than others or they haven't discovered MSE!

Does anyone know which type of beans go best in a sausage casserole, I have Adzuki, Cannellini and Red Kidney. I also have a can of mixed bean salad but I think I,d like to keep this.

Thanks for the reply. Nope they probably earn less that we do, but they buy branded everything and goodness knows how much rubbish in the form of processed foods, crisps, sweets, fizzy drinks!!!

We have a few treats but nowhere near as many as they buy.
    They definately haven't discovered MSE

    Hi Alison,

The people best placed to advise are those doing the grocery challenge so I'll add your post to that thread where you'll get lots of help and advice.
