Buying first car, used company car for 6.5 yrs, need insurance

Hi there

28yr old male, been driving on a Full UK licence since December 1996. A named driver on my parent's car from that time, had full use (business and personal) of company vehicle since August 2001, been a named driver on my now spouse's car since 1998. No claims that have been my fault, only 1 claim total on the company car. No motoring convictions or speeding tickets etc.

So, now I am looking to buy my own car, but am finding it hard to get my clean driving history taken in to account.

Can anybody recommend particular insurers, methods etc that I can use to get my record taken into account. It's very depressing as most insurers are counting me as having 0 years no claims.

Thanks in advance.

Mark

What do your parents' and wife's insurers say?
  • My company insurance doesn't have me as a named driver on a specific car, even though I drive it pretty much all of the time. I think this doesn't apply to the 'sole driver' no claims discount.

My wife's insurer (Churchill) doesn't mention named driver NCD even though we did call them for a quote.

Not sure about my parent's, will have to check. I think it's through M&S. I only drive their car about twice a year.

Seem I have lost out by not being a sole driver on my company car (actually a crappy van). But others drive it.

Ah well, may be that I have to bite the bullet and start almost from scratch.

    Any others?
    Regards

    Hi,

I am in the same situation as you and last year bought a camper van.

Admittedly it was a specialist insurer but I had my company (well a lady in hr dept) write a letter to show how many years no claims I had and this was immediately accepted by them.

    Hope this helps

When you called for the quote did you mention that your wife has a policy with them which you are a named driver on? Sometimes they will give an introductory discount for the first year.

Or when they asked how many years NCB you have, you said none?

If it was the second one I'd call them back and mention about your wifes policy and your clean history.

If you did the first one and they weren't bothered then ignore me :D

The fleet manager of my company wrote me a letter when I left saying that I had had 3 years with no claims which was accepted by Eagle Star. This is now 9 years ago though.

I did the same thing last year.. The fleet manager in our company wrote a letter saying I had been driving the company car for 5 years with no accidents and Direct Line gave me 5 years NCD.. Job done. :)
