We are going to California next april for 16 nights and wondering how much money we need to take.
We went late Nov 2005 and took £175 per day for 14 days. This was for 2 people, and now we will have a 2 year old aswell. We are driving from Santa Monica to San Fran so need fuel money plus money for driving to various other places.
With the dollar as it is at the moment how many dollars do we need per day or how many are other people taking. We do not want to be counting the pennies over there but at the same time take £1000's and £1,000s iyswim.
Thanks
Sarah

Give yourselves a strict budget of a hundred dollars per day, to include everything. If you want to spend more than this, try getting a short-term job there (helps if you can speak Spanish).
If you stick to your budget, I guarantee that you will be enormously happy -- to come home!0 -
£175 sounds ample really...i mean it depends if you eat for cheap or flash resturants etc
i always have as much in reserve on my cards as possible , it would suck to have to miss out on doing something because you were a few ££ short0 -

I believe the OP mentioned that this was a 16 day holiday with a two year old child.

Am I the only one who thinks that it is a HOLIDAY.... have fun and spend! Relax and enjoy yourselves. If as you say it is next April and not this April, then you have a whole year to save your pennies.0

Thats what I intend to do:j0

I usually pay for flights & accom & hire car, and then allow $100USD per adult per day for spending money, so I'd be taking £800 for me and £800 for hubby on a 16-day trip, and that would just be pure spending money, not for the actual holiday itself but for meals/taxis/shopping/whatever.
Don't have kids so no idea how much I'd tack on for one of them

If you are going in a years time, now is the time to open a Nationwide current account. Stash your holiday savings in their E-savings account and transfer them to the current account before you go. You will avoid fees when taking money out an ATM and transaction fees when you pay by debit card, and your money will be a lot safer than carrying cash.0
