Hello

I have been with the same power company Powergen for the past 5 years - the metres have not been read for 5 years and now am worrying that when I give the Powergen the reading they will charge at the current prices which is 150% more than when i started with them for electricity - although I have overpaid for gas

I know its my own fault for not getting my metres read- but now am wondering what forumla the power company will apply- ONCE i give them my actual gas and electricity reading

will they just offset one against the other at the now higher elecrticity prices?- or will i get the secondary elec ratefor the excess ??

or will they apply some sort of formula- I plan to discuss with them but wanted to get some advice

thanks for any advice
Steve'

cut and paste below are the readings data
Actual ELEC 99321 EON estimate 84200
Actula GAS 4443 EON estimate 6779

prices charged now for online saver cut and paste belo
Electricity
Normal units up to 900 kWhs
17.682 pence

Normal units
10.6155 pence per kWh

Gas
Normal units up to 2680 kWhs
4.5696 pence

Normal units
2.9127 pence per kWh

for example will they average out the cost over the last four years? and charge me the an average of the previous 5 year prices or will this be all the current prevailing price?

I:A:As there anyone here who would know what Powergens billing policy on this would be?

many thanks for any he

    Hi,

Sadly no, they will average this out as all being used in the current year. Thats standard practice.

However, they are obliged by industry regulations to ensure your meters are read every 28 months (for elec, not sure on the gas one) so you can use that to your advantage.

I would suggest that you haggle and say you want your bill averaging out your way as much as possible to avoid the recent price hikes. They should have read your meter which they are obliged to by their trading licence. You have not obligation to provide readings at all in the industry. You just have the option to.

I would suggest you do your sums though because if it's a big jump you may need some help with a payment plan. Work how much better you may be off if they billed half of it at last years prices, half at this years. They won't go back and spread over 4 years but they may be understanding enough to use prices over the last 28 months since they have failed their licence condition.

You may have to complain to get this though as it's going to be a managers decision as it's not standard practice and they will always use the "you could have given a reading" argument.

    Good luck with it
