Has anyone any recommendations of brands to look for or to be avoided? I don't cheap tacky stuff, but I don't want top of the range either. I'm thinking of spending around £6-8 per sq/m.

I have used floormaster from homebase. No complaints yet. It is down about 3 years and it gets a lot of wear and tear in the house. No chips yet but a few slight scratches that can only be seen in bright sunlight.0

I've got this one

although it isn't as dark as the picture makes it look. Easy to fit yourself and looks really nice0 -
Highly recomended Quickstep make. I've used it and it's so easy to lay, and looks fab and is really hard wearing. Really good!! Can't say it enough!!! I got it from floors2go, and they had a huge range of colours too.
Good lucj0 -
Quickstep is good. Mate has that but it's a bit more expensive as the pieces seem narrower. Like you say it's easy to lay and can also be taken up and relayed without a problem0

As a fitter, I would say most laminates in the range 6-8 are relatively cheap. Try and avoid makes such as BingoLOc which IMO chips far too easily. As mentioned before Quickstep is the business, probably the best laminate flooring you can buy and one of the biggest range of colours and designs.
Only problem here is that you pay for quality, quickstep starts around 14-16 per sq m. If you can stretch to that, my advice would be to have it. I've fitted many types of laminate from floors2go, b&q, homebase etc and can't stress how good quickstep really is!
They do manufacture a slightly cheaper brand around 10 per sq m, again available from floors2go, but the name escapes me at the moment!:)0 -
Quickstep all the way,
Best one out there0 -
another vote for quickstep, just ordered it today and having it fitted next week. shop around as prices do vary, i got ours down from £20-24 sq metre to £17.
its the perspective 950 4 bevelled edges one

Try to avoid any of the Loc system ones, as mentioned before they are useless and chip really easily as you lay them. Not easy though, as the vast majority of the cheaper laminates are Loc ones.
Try to find a Clic system one.Much easier to lay and you can find them in the cheaper ranges too. We've just laid a Clic Beech laminate bought from Allied for £7 sq metre (normally £9 though).0 -
 And going SOooo out of fashion already.
Bit like borders and dual finish wallpapers and Magnolia paint.
Bl@@dy cold in the winter compared to carpet.
I will NEVER have laminate flooring again."Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0 -

Most laminates are basically loc systems, but Quicksteps 'loc' system is patented as uniclic and basically is by far the best engineered and 'tightest' system around. Its only laminate that needs glue that isnt Loc, but these are now far and few between because of the ease of loc systems.
As for being cold in winter, it all depends on what underlay is down and how well insulated the house is....My floors are definately as warm as the carpet was. You can also have heating underneath if you want to push the boat out!
As far as going out of fashion? Its the carpet companies that are struggling because of things such as laminate and hardwood flooring.0
