but for lower computers with 256 of SD ram for example is going to struggle with windows, anti virus, firewall, all other background applications, and then running a program on top!

Yes.....but if you are using a computer like this you are generally not going to be playing the latest games on it.

He he well with the Netgear setup menu it does mention that messing with the outbound sevices is for 'advanced users' ;)

What you are saying is perfectly true though - and to be honest I have the XP SP2 firewall running which act as my braces... Before I had a router I used to use Zonealarm Pro which was reasonably good, and as mentioned previously Kerios is another good one.

I've got to say......I've found this thread quite amusing in places......Unfortunately we are not really getting anywhere.

Running a software firewall on top of the one in your router is purely a personal choice. If the security of your computer is a high priority for you, then there is no problem at all to run both.

LOL...that was good. Obviously the last four years of my degree course (Bsc (Hons) IT and Computing) hasn't taught me enough.

  • Yes it is personal choice... but even if security is high priority, your data is secure with a hardware firewall :)

    Up to you though!

Well.. unless an app or virus is resident and manages to hijack a common port and send out any details or key presses from your pc. Unlikely but you never know (puts a lot of responsibility on AV and ani spyware). Generally you will be fine, but I'd always rather be safe than sorry. To me what is going out is as important as what is coming in. With regards to memory you should be ok, I've got an old P3 with 256mb ram and it runs Kerio and hosts a webserver etc... in XP. It gets by fine.

  • Thats you :)

Different people have very different processes in the background! hehe

For me, i need every mb in the background free for important stuff like games ;)

Anyway yess i completely agree wolfman.

    JESUS FELLA's

What started as a basic thread has turned into a nightmare....i am now MORE confused than when i started!!

To answer a few questions you posted earlier

My ISP is Eclipse Internet, I DO have ADSL and currently use an SMCBRA router

Anybody need to know anything else?

    Cheers in advance

    Pete
  • Maybe I can be of some help for you mercman.
We desperately need to know if you have ADSL connection such as BT, or CABLE such as NTL. If you have ADSL you need an ADSL MODEM ROUTER which is more costly. I have posted both types below for you however so you can choose.

ADSL Wireles router (For BT ADSL (inc aol))
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...1144096-0182814

    Cable Wireless router (For NTL)
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...1144096-0182814

You would need 2 PCI Cards for your PC's:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...1144096-0182814

You would need 2 PCMCIA Cards for your laptops (Make sure they have card slots in):
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...1144096-0182814

To connect your printers, the best option would be to connect them to a pc that is always on, such as a server. Then you can use File/Printer sharing in order for all computers to print on that printer.

You will have to turn ALL firewalls off and the computers and laptops including windows/norton/mcaffee firewalls, and they are not needed as the router is a hardware and a software firewall.

Follow instructions in manual on how to set up your broadband, and it should all be fine. If not post here with problems.

Hope everything is ok for you.
