Nationwide are not the only lender out there, and frankly, they have been less and less competitive since I first became a customer in 2002.

The irony is that Nationwide's 'prudent' lending will only be served by 'imprudent' borrowers who decide to stay with them. I won't be one of them.

Couldn't agree more. My BoE tracker deal with them ends in Sept and I can't see myself staying with them as they have been increasing their margins for the last 3 or 4 years. Shame as I've been with them since '98 and they were pretty good to start with.
    They are now becoming uncompetitive.
Perhaps they need to be.... after all they are towards the lower end of the league table of building soc's who can cover their lending with their retail activity.

Well I finally left my bank last year (after 20 years) to go to a bank which actually paid interest for my current account and so I'm more than happy to vote with my feet with my mortgage too.

They are putting them up now in anticipation of this - then when they drop to effectively what they were before, unasuming punters will say "ooh look,, Nationwide are dropping their rates"... all very sneaky. That's business I guess. I'm sure my savings rates will be cut again though, which really infuriates me!!

Flippin 'eck... what's going on??? I agree with dannyboycey??

And it looks as though there are no Early repayment charges too - unlike Nationwide's 3% for the first 5 years of a life tracker..pretty good deal

If you're after a lifetime tracker with no tie-ins, I think it's the best out there right now. Only downside is the £600 fee, but over the course of the mortgage, it should pay for itself against other deals.

I suppose a broker 'might' be able to access something better?

Btw, I almost went for the Nationwide life tracker when it was at 0.44% above base, until I noticed the (sneaky imho) early repayment charge hidden away on another page. Although it's at odds with a 'lifetime' tracker, I still don't like the idea of being stuck on a variable rate for five years with no way out!

They sell housing goods, TVs, Fridges, to people with bad credit. That's their official view.

My personal view is that they sell expensive things to people who can't afford them, repossess them, and then sell them again. And the cycle repeats.

£300 quid total price for a Philips DVD recorder????!?!?! http://www.brighthouse.co.uk/products/home-entertainment/dvd-and-home-cinema/display-product-large.asp?id=PHDVDR550

Looks identical to the one Richer Sounds are selling for £79

OK, not quite. The Richer Sounds one doesn't have HDMI output.

But a bit under £100 on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200206771644

    OMG!!!

The ebay one is even better value! What a rip off! I can't believe pple will buy at such inflated prices! Even with a bad credit history, no-one deserves that. Better to cough up £80 (if you must) and eat bread & water for a while than pay £1.94pw over 156 weeks (3years!)

    IMHO.

I booked the deal earlier this month (the day before they changed to 0.38%, in fact).

HSBC still appear to have the cheapest tracker, even at 0.38%.

    Not for existing/loyal customers!

But £1.94 is sooooo much smaller a number than £80 or £100.

No, but they don't have to do it. It's not as if a DVD player is in any way essential.

we have a boe tracker with offset provision and have done for ten years. I've not changed due to liking the product -as much as anyone can ever love their mortgage. I get to the interesting point - in those ten years the product rate has changed for new borrowers. We have plus 0.69. It has been as low as 0.49 and a few weeks ago was 0.79. I looked last night andit is now 1.09 but with a mini sweetener until dec 2008. The fees have gone up too.....on all of them, we paid 299.

Due to level of our mortgage it was never worth changing to the lower rate with the fee involved but it is interesting what is happening to margins and fees.

Yes, I noticed this when I was searching-it's quite a significant difference too. I also noticed that their deals are better for Premier Account customers....then I noticed you need savings of £50k or mortgage of £250k to have a Premier Account

I remember when Nationwide had a policy of offering the same deals to existing owners, and they advertised it regularly. Now they only advertise their credit card for foreign transactions. I wonder how long that will last before it too disappears without a whimper...

When the CC loses that benefit, it's gone! Cut in pieces and scattered over the River Severn!
