However the post office no longer returns mail without a return address on it, so you might as well bin any that turns up yourself. And if you happen to open it beforehand, no-one is going to know.

P.s. Is "I wanted to know what it said" or "I thought there might be money inside that I could steal" a reasonable excuse?

As ever, I can't find the link when I need it.

Then I found the link to section 84

    To summarise, it's illegal.
  • When we moved 2 years ago we kept getting letters for previous ocupants ex husband,no address so kept putting back in post not at this address, until one day my four year old daughter opened one, honest, just happened to be from a debt company saying the baliffs were due,I recognised the letter as one from the same company I had sent back several times before so I rang them, they said they ignored not at this address returns as debtors often did this to throw them off track, I told them if the baliffs did visit or any more mail was sent I would sue, have heard nothing since, another thing which was strange was that we opened a savings account for our daughter but were told that they had an active account with wages being paid in at our address, we were asked if we knew the name-we didn't it wasn't the previous occupant but we had been told that the son of prev. occupant had lodgers, anyway they checked electoral roll and it came up with our name so the other account was frozen-bet he had a shock when he went to use the cashpoint!.(This was 6 months after we moved in) I believe most companies use electoral roll/utility bills so get these changed asap. Good luck, make records of all calls to utility companies etc or better still send recorded delivery confirmation of phone calls.

We wern't going to start opening post or anything, I'm sure it wouldn't get us anywhere anyway.

Vendors son turned up on Sunday asking for the mail, my husband asked him if he knew one of the names that the revenues and benefits had been after - he said no but then still insisted on taking their letters. I asked about the utilities and he insisted they hadn't had a BT line for a year because they didn't use it, certainly doesn't correspond with BTs point of view! Also said the gas and elec suppliers were a different company and looked very blank when I asked him if they'd informed the suppliers that they were moving.
Forgot to warn them that we wouldn't hold any more mail and that we would start returning it to the sender.

BT came and fixed the line today so thats fine now but we also had a knock on the door asking for the vendor from a man who I'm 99% sure was a bailiff. He didn't hang around once I said she didn't live there though, didn't ask if we had contact details or anything.
