diy cross stitch framing?

Hi all,
I want to frame some of my cross stitch projects and some photos. Has anyone done this? I've got a couple of frames to practice on, I figured hobbycraft to price up mounts and frame cutters and then try and find it cheaper else where. Is it pretty straight forward? Paying someone to frame stuff is just not a option financially at the mo.

Thanking you all in advance

I've framed lot of my cross stitch pictures, my way might not be the professional way to do it but it works, I couldn't afford to pay someone to do it.

I iron the picture on the wrong side, pinning it around the edges, to the ironing board, make sure it's square. I then use a piece of light weight iron on interfacing to back it. Attach it to the cardboard backing form the photo frame, or a piece of stiff card with double sided sticky tape, just around the edges, making sure you keep it square. If you've use Aida fabric you can clearly see the straight edge. I always cut the fabric to fit the card so there's no overlap, you need to pull it tight so that it lies flat. Then just put it in the frame with a mount and job done. Whatever you do don't stick it to the backing board with pva glue as it stains the fabric.

Places like Wilkinsons do some half sensible frames for only a few quid.
And theres lots of mounts on ebay. Supprisingly cheap as well.

Due to the difficulty and expense of making/trimming mounts, i either use a clip frame, or try to get a ready made mount of the right size - eg buy an ugly frame and recycle the mount - charity shops can be good for this!

just a little advice, I used to frame my own cross stitch. as you have put lots of work into it, you want to protect your work so pad the board with a few tiles, then a white sheet, then iron through the back of another towel to avoid flattenng your stitches. then make sure the card you mount onto will not leak colour onto your stitches - cut a bit off, wet and rub with a white tissue to check. If you decide to trim your piece to fit, then you can "bind" raw edges with masking tape, I find this v good for attaching to the backing too 9 stich over and tape. Drawing pins are good for stretching the canvas taut. whatever you do, don't use glue!
