Asbestos Garage. Needs removing ?

And this is why the OP needs to find out if the garage is a sectional one before buying. That way they know whether they can afford to buy or not
By the way Yan1, if you agree 100% why start talking about licensed contractors and Corgi????
So OP, back to the matter in hand, the best thing you can do is look whether the garage is a sectional one - in which case it shouldn't be too much of an expensive job to remove (although replacing the garage would cost a fair bit) and you probably also need to look at the drainpipes and gutters as well.
Also bear in mind that so long as the garage is in a good condition - there's nothing to worry about in the immediate future0 -
Not sure about the policy on links on here, but on another forum, there is a story about a chap who put his garage on eBay. Someone came and took it away for him, and paid him too!!

I related dealing with asbestos to working with gas because they are potentially both killers. Gas has immediate devasting effects. Asbestos has long term not so instant dramatic effects. Hey, take the chance if you like.
When years and years of research has been carried out on asbestos exposure and different types etc, then we will be able to factually advise on this subject.0 -
If the garage is in good condition then why replace it?
In my area there are hundreds of houses with asbestos garages. My old house had one, I bought the house with it there, used it and sold the house with it still there, neither I or the new owner were concerned by it (as there is no danger to health until you start creating dust from the sheets).
My current house also had an asbestos garage, we had to get rid of it to build an extension. I took it down myself wearing a good quality dust mask and old clothes I threw out straight after.
Our local council (Nottingham c.c) provided a free disposal service for asbestos as long as it is bagged up. You make an appointment at their site and take it down, however it had to be in one trip as this service is once per house forever.
So if you don't want to replace it as it's perfectly usable, don't.
But if you do want to then you potentially could for free, with a bit of work, of course.0 -
Official advice I had about our asbestos garage wasIF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT.
In other words if it does not need repairing and is not in the way leave it alone. The only thing that was recommended was to paint any walls and accessible areas to hold the dust.0 -
we had our asbestos garage roof removed rather cheaply to be honest, we phoned around and found a company who does commercial removal, they hire in big skips but on this occasion never filled it with the job, it had been paid for alerady, so they just charged us for removal.
phone around licenced companies to find out how much
dont let it put you off the house though.0 -
