Dress Help?

Hey everyone, hope you can advise.

We are looking to get married next August and are in the VERY early stages of things at the moment. We have a venue and entertainment in mind but nothing is booked yet.

We are working to a tightish budget and as I'm 34, I feel a big pouffy wedding dress is a little late for me (and tbh wouldn't suit me at all). Having one made seems somewhat of an extravagance given the budget so I've been looking at high street alternatives.

Anyhoo, I carted off to Meadowhell the other day and tried on 8 from Monsoon, Debenhams, House of Fraser etc, most oif them made me look like a pig in a frock, but I keep coming back to my original choice of this:

http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10001_17632_525253_-1

which is very reasonable at £140

My problem is as the wedding is sooo far off, should I buy it now? (I am looking to drop 1 1/2 dress sizes before then) Should I buy it in the smaller size, the issue being as it's bias cut there's seams all over the place and I think it might be impossible to take in if I got the larger size and lost the weight.

Other thing is of course, I don;t know when it may be discontinued...

Oh yeah, and what do you think if it as a frock anyway?

    Hi Little Miss,

Just a quick note to say dont forget you can get 2% back via Greasy Palm...every little helps.

Also id buy the dress a size smaller and you can always have it altered if it dosnt quite fit. I had this done with a wedding dress I bought for my ball and you'd never tell.

Hope the planning goes well! :p

I think that it is a very pretty dress, I'm sure you'll look lovely!

If you are sure that you can lose the extra inches in time for the wedding, then get it in the smaller size; it will be a good motivator to lose the weight too! And if all else fails you can get one of those sucky-in bodies that claim to make you look a size smaller!
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!

  • The dress is gorgeous.

Get it in the size you are now - even when you go on to lose the weight, it's much easier to alter a dress that's too big. Bias cut dresses always need altering anyway, because everyone goes in and out in different places.

PS I'll also be a 35 year old bride when I get married next year, I'm glad I'm not the only one here worried I'm too old for a traditional frock:eek:

Lovely dress but it does look as if it might be difficult to alter.

Apparently if you take something in more than 2 sizes it loses its shape - not sure how true it is but it makes sense.

If it was me and I really loved it I would buy it in the smaller size and join weightwatchers.

I'm 40 and was worried about having a traditional dress but once i tried it on my doubts flew out the window.
Officially a non-smoker but still rounder than recommended :p

    Lovely dress :)

I had a similar problem, didn't have time to order a traditional dress and wanted something simpler than those in the shops. I was saved by a kindly shop owner referring me to a local dressmaker, who specialises in weddings.
To my suprise I'm getting exactly what I want, but for cheaper than off the peg.

Have you tought about getting it made?
  • Well I bought the 12 - which is only really 1.5 sizes too small so not too much of a boot camp diet and fitness.

A dressmaker friend of mine went into the shop and proclaimed it 'almost impossible' to alter.

All the ones in the shop had pulls on the satin/lippy marks so I ordered online and thanks to Vouchers and Codes MSE thread got 20% off and free delivery!!!!

So it was the grand sum of £112

I so love this place and all the great people here :T
  • Sorry to drag this up but it has the link for the dress in it....

REALLY can;t decide now on jewellry, the dress I'm thinking is Oscar acceptance speech looking, can't decide on pearls or diamonds (well, CZ!!!) and choker or longer

Hairwise also I'm torn between a mini top hat with 1/4 veil or updo with strings of pearls gripped in (beads from Claire's or somewhere) or diamondy grips (prob Claire's again)

My big bridesmaid and most of my mates (and me for that matter) aren't really girly girls so I'm a bit stuck for feedback, any advice REALLY welcomed!

I don;t think with a cowl neck you can wear a very long necklance, but try a few styles on at home (even with string or something) and see what looks best before you go shopping.

I like pearls myself but sparlies are always nice too.

I don;t think a mini top hat would go with the style of dress - I love the idea of pearls in your hair or diamond grips - or even a tiara.

What about a feathery hair facinator (sp) thing? Less than a hat, but more than a sparkyl hairgrip. The pearls are a brilliant idea though - how about a string of beads that match your colour scheme? Don;t foget to try out the different looks well before the wedding, and wearing the dress - last thing you want is a panic on the day!
This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!

  • I'm just a little worried about too much 'boobage', as the cowl is so low and the back is low too creative underqear will need to be employed, and I don't think I'll be able to 'hoik 'em up' so may appear slightly less um pert than normal
