I have original cd discs and floppy discs.
I have just upgraded my PC to a dell on the motherboad all conections are SATA
I want to install windows 98 onto a blank hard drive but it wont let me.
It keeps saying when loading files off the floppy cannot find CDrom drivers installation will now be aborted. This i believe to be the SATA issue with no driver on the floppy for SATA and so cannot load cd rom drivers.

How do i get round this???

I doubt if Windows 98 ever supported SATA drives. It's a ten year old OS. Wouldn't something newer be a good idea?

Of course you may have a genuine reason, but why do you want to install Windows 98 on a new PC which most likely came with either XP or Vista?

Was gonna suggest the same thing, though reading around, it does appear that SATA support for 98 is available. Anyway, if the problem is loading the CD drivers to carry on the installation: I seem to recall, when I used to install 98, many times on many machines, it was actually quicker to copy the setup files to the HDD first and then run the setup from there. I wonder if it is possible for you to do this somehow. Perhaps with the HDD in another working machine, or find a bootdisk that does offer SATA support, not sure if an XP would?

Not a lot of help I'm afraid, it isn't something I've ever had to do, but hopefully something to think about.

    :)

    yes the reason is legit
i have a load of old programs i wish to run which will not run on xp or vista.

Windows XP or windows vista do not like the windows 98 cd i cant open it by double clicking and when i have found a way round it says you can not use this version of windows whilst opperating this version or words to that effect and says i need to go to ms dos. Of course as soon as i do this i lose the sata HDD and CDROM.

  • rather than installing win 98, just use the compatibility mode feature or try dosbox: www.dosbox.com

DOSbox or similar gets my vote. Not only is the SATA thing going to be an issue but you're going to be banging your head with the 128GB HDD size limit and the 350MHz timing bug as well as not being able to find drivers for most of the hardware.

yes funnily enough i am banging my head on the wall now. why did i sell that system!!! would have come in useful now.

It appears from what has been said that there a very few ways around this issue and yes i hadnt though about the hardware compatability issue.
