hi thanks for taking a look, the story is my father was sacked for gross misconduct (long story, managers wanted rid of him for sticking up for the rest of staff, never stick your neck on the line for other people) anyway he was sacked before christmas and i have just found out that he has not been recieving any help re: jsa, and says he has been told he is not entitled to anything because my mum earns too much, now i might be being stupid here but my mum only earns £400 a month pt, how the hell is that enough to live off after the mortgage council tax and other bills have been paid.
has my father been miss-informed? it seems wrong that someone who has paid so much in tax and national insurance over 35yrs is left to struggle, while others get paid to sit on their !!!!!! for their whole lives, please tell me someone has got it wrong

My advice would be to tell your father to fill in the JSA forms and not take anyones word for it without actually applying.
Sounds to me as though he would most certainly be entitled to JSA. I would also put in a claim for income support too. They can only reject you but I think it's best to at least make an application.
Someone else might have better information for you but thats what I would do.0 -
thats the thing it wasnt information from a friend, it was the job centre that told him surley its wrong they are having to spend there savings to pay bills and that wont last long as they only have a few grand0

Has he actually applied for JSA? If so, then if he has paid sufficient NI Contributions, he will be entitled to JSA(CB). However, he may receive a sanction of up to 26 weeks due to having been dismissed.
If he has not paid sufficient NI Contributions, then he will not be entitled to income based JSA, as his wife earns too much for this.
They may also be entitled to a small deduction on their Council Tax.
How many hours does his wife work?
They are definitely not entitled to Income Support, unless either of them is disabled or if they have dependents.Gone ... or have I?0 -
sorry i dont know if he applied or if they just told him he wouldnt be entitled to it, i think he has paid enough ni he paid over 200 a month for over 20yrs but had a break of about two months last year when he was made redundant would this affect it.
my mum works between 18-20hrs a week not too sure as i dont live with them anymore
is the 26 week sanction how long he would have to wait to recieve anything or a limit to how many week he could claim
thanks0 -
26 weeks is the limit as to how long they could apply the sanction, it may be less than that depending on the circumstances.
The gap in employment could affect his entitlement - did he sign on during this period?
Even if he does not receive anything, it is still important for him to sign on in order to receive NI Credits (primarily towards his pension entitlement).Gone ... or have I?0 -
i think he did sign on when he was made redundant and he is signing on now.
thanks for the info0 -
No problems, his award notice (you receive one even if they aren't going to pay you anything) should detail why he is not entitled. If you post back with any more questions after checking that, we'll do what we can to help xGone ... or have I?0
