Repairing bras (wire poking through)

Does anybody know how to repair bras when the wire has poked through?

This seems to happen quite a lot with my bras (even through I have been properly fitted for the right size and I always hand wash them). I have tried sowing up the holes but they always seem to poke back through (very painful!)

The only way I can see it working is if you can buy some of the felt type stuff and patch it up, do they sell this anywhere?

Thanks for any advice,
Maddie

Most fabric type markets will sell that kind or material and I think its quite cheap. if you want just a small patch for the ends of bra's, then you could try asking online companies for a sample (they usually send a 3inch square) - there are plenty of companies out there to choose from!

When I first buy a bra, I usually like to sew around the wire through the felt first to keep it secure and less likely to move, then add a small piece of plain fabric the width of the felt material already there and stitch it in place. Whilst im not very err, heavy on top - ive never had anymore wires poking through since!

When I went to get measured for a bra - I was told that the reason that wires poked through was that the cup size was not big enough for me.

Thanks for the tips, off to look for free samples ;)

I realise it has probably happened due to the bras being the wrong size, but thats because I seem to change size a lot! I just wish they would put something on the ends of the wires, some are incredibly sharp!

I have successfully repaired a couple of bras by pushing the wire back in place and superglueing the fabric over the top. They were both machine-washable bras, and have been through several more machine washes without any mishap!

I'm sure this problem can occur more often if you wear the wrong size bra, but I know I'm wearing the right size (I always get fitted at Bravissimo where I swear they can do no wrong - they fitted me a size smaller in the back and THREE cup sizes BIGGER than anybody else who's ever fitted me, and finally all my bras fit, wherever I buy them!) My favourite one's just developed a loose wire - pretty white cotton bras are few and far between in a 32G - so thanks to the OP for starting this thread.

I do the superglue thing and sew on top just in case as well. I always get my bras fitted so i don't think it's a misfitting thing, just a quality control thing possibly.

It's usually the wires without a plastic cap on the end that come through - most of the others seem to have a thing on them like hairclips???

  • I have just removed my fave bra from the washing machine with exactly this problem. It does have a plastic cap over it's end put poked through nevertheless. Will try and sew something over it now. Thanks for the thread!

My solution is much more low tech! I take the wire out and use them as a non-wired bra. There are times when that's what I like (eg, in a hot place on holiday ... er ... when that happens!) or if I'm pre-menstrual and my breasts are too sore to go to bed without a bra (there are a lot of them, iyswim). So I end up with a mixture of wired and unwired. Mind, they are all grey, so perhaps I'm not someone to take advice on on this point.
